Been -20 to -30F here the last few days. The clutch has been comically bad to the point its a little bit of a challenge. Stalled the truck at a set of lights for the first time on the road.

It has to be built better than the RA60/61 on the second gens…. that thing was a poorly executed time bomb. My 2008 release bearing gave up and started eating the pilot shaft and diaphragm spring at 60k miles. Replaced it with the infamous URD sleeve/bored out bearing kit as that was the TW conventional wisdom, and that bearing gave up after 1k miles. URD to their own admission used a bad batch of aftermarket bearings that failed early.

Dropped the trans again and put in a new URD bearing, which started slipping against the new clutch… turns out the culprit on these was a weak slave pushrod return spring all along.

Banking on my 2019 being better built. It’d be hard to be worse than the second gen 6MT…

I usually just get into 3rd gear and cruise there for a while til is up to temp.

Or i pump it a bunch of times until it gets less bad.

So, maybe this is the wrong spot, but here goes.

I have a 2022 MT OR that is being built soon. I've driven plenty of manuals, all cars and a couple motorcycles. I've never driven a truck in manual let alone a 4x4 (had a 2008 Xterra AT before it got totalled). I know y'all in this thread are biased towards a stick, but, will it be difficult to learn how to off road in this? Not looking to go do any crazy stuff (yet), mostly get up the mountain for snowboarding or going and checking out a random forest trail in some semi muddy conditions. Little sad I'll be losing out on remote start, but that isn't a deal breaker.

TLDR; Will MT OR Taco be good or easy to adapt to for a guy with no MT 4x4 experience. Thanks!

Heck yeah. This is my first part time 4wd and truck. Wheeling is great with it as are slick conditions. It all comes naturally, IMHO.

The truck will be awesome and you’ll be just fine. Practice locking and locking the rear diff a few times and you’re good to go.

bunch of us have remote starts on our MTs. Check out @N2DesignsInc

It's pretty easy. Bit of a learning curve off-road but nothing crazy. You'll be surprised how easy it is to shift in 4Lo.

    Easy peasy.

You'll be like "why did I ever ask that question in public" hahahahahahahaah just kidding. Take it easy, you'll do great.

Funny story. When I test drove the MT before I bought, the sales weenie was amazed he actually had a live customer who could drive a MT!!

The sales guy I worked with didn't even know how to start the manual truck. Held key in his hand while trying to push the 4wd knob. There was really no way to tell him with out making him look like an idiot.

As mentioned, get the N2 remote start. It’s awesome and for $350, pretty much a no brainer. Took me an hour or so to put in.

with the manual, you make it active by putting it in ready mode. (Truck in neutral, foot on brake, pull parking brake, foot off brake). The TPMS light will blink at you confirming, then you turn the truck off and pull the key. The remote start will keep the truck running until you shut the drivers door. It shuts the truck off and locks the doors so there is no way to put it in gear. To remote start, just hit the lock button on your factory fob 3x. They have the option to add a cell module so you can start it with your phone from anywhere, but I didn’t get that. Can always add later.

Hmm. I was considering the N2 but this gives me pause. I don't have TPMS in my truck. I wonder if this is an issue? I imagine the light is there but if it's actually tied to the system somehow I wonder if it causes trouble.

If you have a Pro MT in Lunar Rock you have a TPMS. It's been mandatory since 2008.

As far as off-roading and this thing goes, it's a cinch. Just remember, the Sports have hill start hold, the Off-Roads do not.

Rock climbing can be a bit of a chore but it sounds like you're looking to not get that crazy so you'll have a ton of fun. And don't be afraid of using 4Lo For the big hills. It'll save your clutch a lot of wear and tear. Just remember it's geared far lower than 4Hi lol
