What's y'alls opinion on manual when you get hurt? Been driving manual for 20 years and snowbarding/mtb riding for about that long. Two broken collar bones and an arm later and I'm second guessing if my next purchase will be manual..

I've forced every girl I've been serious with to learn because of this and it's saved me a couple times.

A year ago I messed up my left knee. Couldn't walk or put weight on it. Drove myself to the clinic, barely made it inside. Still drove myself home and for the next few days of major pain.

If you wreck your right side, you are just as hosed no matter the vehicle.

    Really?

What else in life are you reconsidering due to the MT option?

What about an attack from Mars?? How are you addressing that?

I’ve been into, mtb, snowboard, ski, rugby, even paragliding for multiple (full) decades as well…

when you get hurt - you can either operate a vehicle - or not…

just make it good - not marginal!

    when not; there is ‘Life-flight’!

I'm a little hard pressed to think of any injury that would pre-empt me from driving my stck...short of incapacitating or double amputation.

I broke my left ankle when I was a young hockey playing guy...still daily drove my 5.0 mustang to work, just use right foot for all pedals. If right leg shot, do same with left leg. Same with arms, as long as I have one, all is good...

I think you just need more practice driving while eating a Wendy's triple burger and holding a coffee...

If the problem is caused by man, it can be solved by man.

It's more about owning one vehicle and being able to get to work. I can very easily drive an auto with a cast on either arm, I can less easily/safely drive a manual. A cast on your right leg is the only thing that'll really play a role in an auto.

I guess I bike 2-3 days a week and shit happens all the time, any day I could be out of a limb. Buddy just severed his arm and fractured his elbow three weeks ago so it's fresh in my mind.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

If you are going to live in fear, you have to come to terms with it. Never leave the house. Or, take public transit in a full body suit and parachute. Or, continue on in moderation knowing that shit happens. Or, go headlong into every situation and intersection without looking. Or, skydive with a chute packed by an unlicensed chimp. Or, free climb the Mount Eiger.

Life is a spectrum that you need to find your comfort with.

With regard to any transportation device short of a unicycle, it is never a moment's thought for me.

Yes, but to be fair it probably happened when you were sitting in your LJ and it rolled when parked in a perfectly flat parking lot at Sam's Club...as all jeeps are want to do.

I've been driving manual since the late 1970s, in that time I've managed to get a number of clutch limiting injuries, primarily three broken legs. When I broke my right leg, a break which required "hardware" to screw back together, I was "NWB" (non-weight bearing) for nearly six months; during that time I had a 2002 530i Sport Package 5MT and I was forced to swap it with my wife for her minivan. Basically I slung my casted leg over into the passenger footwell and drove left footed.

The first time I broke my left leg, I was able to use the cast on the clutch pedal, and the second time I was not casted and I was still able to drive relatively pain free. Was my clutch work the smoothest? Hell no. Did I get from point A to point B? Yup. :) The biggest challenge I had the second time I broke the left leg (a break precipitated by a horse slipping on the ice, and as he was catching his balance, he knocked me over on some very jagged ice formed by frozen hoof prints in slush), I had to drive myself to the hospital, and of course Mr. Murph came along for the ride. The trip to the hospital had me catching literally every red light and following a school bus dropping kids off and stopping every hundred yards or so; yeah, my clutch work made me look like a rank beginner. :p
