First gen 2.7 5-speed was a great truck. I had a full header back LC Engineering exhaust on mine. Sounded really good for a 4cyl going through the gears in addition to the bump in performance.

Not that I didn't believe you, but I'd never seen a manual Xterra. Sure enough..

I had one back in 2000, sold it for my ‘02 Tundra. Wish I had kept it but I was so frustrated by the AC space and really wanted RC. The Tundra sat 3 much better and did 4 across the bench on a few occasions with about the same confort as the Taco would have been.

1st gen Tundra with the 4.7 is also a great truck. My buddy dogged the living hell out of his as a work truck. I honestly think it ran better after all the abuse :)

When I purchased my 2017 SR Utility Package, 4 banger, 5 speed, the salesman pitched that for around $1500 more I could upgrade to the AT. Seeing the “out the door price” had already been determined, I told him I viewed the MT as an upgrade from the AT and the lower price was an added bonus. 2792559C-4A89-42E2-833C-95476F3ABCB7.jpg
    A straight 4, with a 5 speed manual is a good match.
I’ve driven this truck on woods roads, city streets and freeways; and never have I thought, “I should have bought the AT.”
    I love this truck.

I had the 4th gen T4R with the v8 and can confirm it enjoyed abuse. 280k at the point of trade in and ran like a top. I definitely miss it sometimes. Not the fuel economy, though…

    Agreed

2.7 should only come with the 5 speed manual. It’s so much better than the auto when it comes to drivability. Makes it feel way less underpowered

    Fify :D

I didn't mind my SR5. ECT always on though, and it wouldn't win any races.... But backwoods technical tarmac or dirt track were it's favorites

Speaking of the 2.7 5 speed, I have a new clutch-related squeak I need help with. It's not the pedal this time--I've greased that well--but one of the components on the underside of the truck. From looking at and listening to it while someone else worked my pedal (!!) it seems the squeak is coming from the pivot point at the end of the slave cylinder, within the little black accordion boot. The sound might also be coming from inside the larger boot attached to the transmission itself, which I assume would be the throwout bearing? But it sounds more to me like the slave cylinder. Can I grease these things? How? With what? Or does a squeak/groan here indicate a part I should be looking to replace soon?

There is a little hinge (if you will) where the pushrod actually connects to the slave inside that boot. Don't know if there's supposed to be grease in there or what.

I bought my truck in July 2020. The clutch pedal was good and quiet until summer of 2021 it started to squeak/creak really loud. It went away as the weather cooled back down and never came back, even in summer of 2022. Not sure why, but I'm not complaining haha.

Ok, thanks. Anyone know about greasing that hinge? These parts commonly fail or do they tend to hang on for a while? Only 55K on my machine.

Yes, get some heavy grease (sprayable 'red and tacky' works well) and get under there and move the pedal and you will see what needs to be greased.
