Woof. What did the actual clutch material look like?

I just watched the Mikes4x4Garage video over the weekend of him swapping his throwout bearing. I was kind of surprised how labor intensive it actually looked to be. Seemed like he had to remove or disconnect a lot of things to drop the transmission.
Who's video did you watch? I wonder if Mikes4x4Garage didn't do the most efficient method.

That's that one that I watched (no sound) also and was pretty pleased. I suppose that I wouldn't disconnect the shafts at the diffs, but it is a lot less work than the SM sez:

Well yeah, they want to make sure we're billing all the labor out.... :bananadead:

To be fair, I think it's them just being obnoxiously thorough. A lot of repairs don't need the extra middle steps (like an 07 tundra serpentine belt, leave the fan and radiator alone....) They're just there to be.... Well, thorough.

IDK. Even the 3rd Gen spark plugs. There was obvious room designed into the plenum to get the coils out on the left side.

Recently, there was another procedure that I saw with too many steps. Just strange as the SM is supposed to be shortcut. Haha!

I couldn’t say how long you may have but seems like some second gen folks push their chirpers a while. I’d probably collect the parts now and do it on the nearest weekend I was able.

The white and red transmission jack at harbor freight with the ratchet strap seems to be a good go to. The job shouldn’t really be difficult at all, just a lot of stuff to remove.

If it were me, I’d do what I did on my Jeep….figure out what a few of the bellhousing bolt threads are, buy some bolts in that thread that are 6-7” long with a non-threaded shank, lop the heads off and angle grind a slot into the ends. Thread into the motor once the trans is out and you have a super easy guide to slide the trans right back onto the engine when done. Then use a flat blade screwdriver in the slots to remove them one at a time and replace with bolts.

Also might consider buying a new OEM rear main seal.

Good luck! Maybe post some pics and such if you DIY, not a lot of info about 3G clutches here :)

Well, the chirping can last another 50K or 5K, no certain number. You will know when it goes... The last time it blew up on my truck at roughly 75K miles. I was on 35s and stock gears. It damaged the input shaft and bent the fork slightly, this time I changed it sooner, but the flywheel was long gone, and I had to get another one, was very lucky local club member donated one to me at no cost.

Still had another 50K lol, maybe... the main reason to drop and change it all was the famous noise and the last experience where things blew up after the noise and I had 7 neutrals and large bill for the extra parts. :anonymous:

Don’t need to touch the starter or the diff, just finished doing the clutch. Which is the third one on this truck in 103K miles...:bananadead:I am on 37s and stock gears now and beat the crap out of this thing since it's my weeekend toy:rasta:. The only special tool you need is a 5ft extension for the top 17mm bellhousing bolts.

It goes very simple if you have exhaust reroute done:

    Remove driveshafts
Pop the shifter from the cabin
Lift the cabin around 1.5" up using 2x4s
    Remove cross member
Remove all the 14 and 17mm bolts around
    Drop the whole assembly down
Do the clutch and rear main seal
Put it all back, you can remove the transfer case and install it after if wiggling the entire thing isn't your thing :p

while at it, extended the breathers for tranny and t-case (should be 3 lines in total, 2 for t-case and 1 for tranny).

This job fucking sucked! But next time it'll go easy, I hope :annoyed:

Thanks! The 2nd Gen'ers is what I am keying off of, esp as they have that weird pilot bearing.

I was thinking about a transmission adapter for a jack since I just don't have anymore storage space.

    Good idea on the studs.

I really don't want to touch the clutch itself. I am very confident that the clutch is solid. Even sharing used cars between my wife and I, we never had a wear issue. So, the RMS shall stay for now.

I will try to get some pics but am usually really bad about it.

    Hahaha!

I saw his stuff after I posted up.

After having helped a couple folks install gears in their Tacos, it is pretty easy after watching a few vids. Extra hands are key.

Thanks. I just need 1,000mi to psyche myself up. Definitely need to get it done before any trips.

    Thanks for the tips!

I like to wiggle things, so that should be just fine. The longer it takes, the better.

Why extend the breathers? Just to help with access?

Oh yeah, fun fact, the reverse sensor wiring got damaged while re-installing it all back. So here goes the spare fj case that I have for my future manual swap to save the day! The sensors are interchangeable if anyone ever gets’s a similar problem.

They are located quiet low from the factory, just above the wheel. If you go through deep water crossings it will suck water in and damage the t-case actuator mostly, another common problem when moisture get's inside and 4WD stops working.

Ah! So, the actual breather end.

I have a slight suspicion that running through water might have something to do with my TOB. I'm promising myself that I am not going that deep in the future. Deepest was near or just above the door sills.
