I can really confirm. The engagement is very aggressive. Similar to my old S2000.

My truck is on 265/70R17 C-Load tires for about 25k miles and counting

    I don't notice much difference

I'm also on lighter aftermarket wheels, but I don't think that makes much of a difference

I do have the 2Low mod and agree it's great. The two mods I've done are 2low and a the TRD ball shift knob.

I like the idea of pizza cutters a lot, but I think I'd prefer to get them with a 17" wheel since there are more options available in that size, and I'm not quite ready to buy a new set of wheels yet.

Yeah... definitely way more options with a 255/80/17. Plus, the tire itself will be a bit lighter.

There are 2 hybrids i believe in 255/85/16, rest are MTs. I never owned MTs and never will, unless its for a dedicated bush rig :)

If i was wheeling lots, 5.29s would be the answer.

Yeah if i was wheeling lots, 5.29s would be super awesome. Now that I use my truck for work, I dont wheel just for purpose of wheeling anymore. Gotta make sure my taco lasts me many, many years :)

I honestly felt like the truck was over geared for normal driving with stock size tires and 4.30 rear end. One of first things i noticed when I drove it for the first time, how low 1st gear is.

I feel the gap between 1st and 2nd is a little too wide. But 2nd isn't quite deep enough stock to start off in (it was in my 95 Pathfinder, 06 LJ, and 17 Frontier)

I was always curious if a tune would help this.

In my experience, a tune doesn’t do anything to help starts in 2nd. Or put another way, I still don’t like starting in 2nd with a tune. Others seem to think it’s okay, but I felt it needed too much clutch slip. I even have 5.29s and still think it requires too much clutch slip.

Gears would help. Tune won't change the physical characteristics of the gearing being too tall (or the fucking reverse gear.... What the hell is even that, Toyota)

2nd gear 100% should have been a bit lower. I can go like 70MPH in 2nd, cuz you know, race truck and all :)

The other MT V6 truck i had was a 07 Mazda b4000 (miss it dearly). You can kind of start in 2nd but it struggled a bit, i rarely did it.

Every MT car/truck I have owned had crazy tall R. I think its a gear storage issue, thats my best guess after all the years of trying to figure it out.

Ya I’m not sure why reverse tends to be on the high side. I assume it has to do with a limitation/trade-off of how manual transmissions are designed. I don’t worry about it much. I just slip the clutch gently or slip it, coast, slip it, coast. I rarely let the clutch all the way out. It has to be a very long distance to do that. That or I’m screwing around in snow/mud/sand/etc.

Yeah, its not a big deal at all.

My driveway has a slight slope and have zero issues backing up my 6x12 enclosed just by slipping the clutch a few times.

I do use 2WD low mod a lot but it has to be way steeper than my driveway. 2WD low mod really is an amazing invention.

I didn't notice it as a problem in my aforementioned MT vehicles.

If anything.... The 17 Frontier was geared too low ... Thing would dance in R

    I'm satisfied with 4lo. I haven't had a need for 2lo. That could change I suppose.

It’s weird, because while the Frontier transmission R ratio is lower, the axle gearing is taller to the point that R overall is taller on Frontier than Tacoma. I felt like my frontier reverse sucked, but it was pretty close to the Tacoma’s. Which also sucks. Lol.

The frontier did have a (significantly) stronger engine and a 9 lb heavier flywheel, so it’s low end was a bit better despite R being very close and about as poor as the Tacoma

4LO is just fine and dandy until you gotta maneuver a trailer up a steep hill on pavement. :)

Assuming you have to turn, yes I can see the disadvantage. :)
