I see. In that scenario I would just clutch in, rev match to 5k and go straight to 3rd. If I properly rev match is there any negative consequences to not double clutching?

As for heel toeing in the Tacoma that makes sense. Having an awkward pedal setup can make it very difficult. And like you said heel toeing in a 4x4 truck is more for shits and giggles than anything else.

Here's what I'm working with right now (not a Tacoma). It works pretty well, barely even have to rotate my foot to blip the throttle.

I don't know the exact weight to it but yes it does make the throws flow a bit easier

That's just it, unless you actually double clutch you aren't spinning up the transmission input (or layshaft or intermediate shaft or whatever you want to call what isn't connected to either the output or the engine when the clutch is depressed and the trans is in neutral) that started losing reves as soon as you pushed the clutch pedal down. Releasing the clutch in neutral and blipping the throttle speeds the trans input up to better match the output speed, effectively lightening the load on the syncro.

What gear ratio do you have in that crawlbox?

Hm this layshaft or intermediate shaft is where my thought process was flawed. I was under the impression that when I was clutched in the transmission was spinning at a rate directly proportional to the wheels. In which case all I needed to do was match the engine to the rev required by whichever gear I wanted to be in and re-engage.

So when I'm clutched in the transmission is disengaged from the engine output (obviously) AND the drive wheels?

Edit: you say trans is disconnected to the output when clutch is depressed and in neutral but what about when clutch is depressed and trans is in gear? Is trans rotating proportional to the wheels at that point?

I think I'm coming to a realization on how synchros actually work. Correct me if I'm wrong...

With the clutch depressed...when I move the shifter from neutral to a gear the synchro smoothly matches trans to wheels. The synchro has accomplished its task before the clutch is ever released. Clutch is released to re-engage engine to trans. Thus rev matching the engine without rev matching the trans first (accomplished by double clutching) results in increased synchro wear. Yes?

If so, I did not fully understand synchros until just now

I've found the heel and toeing tricky (depends on the boots I'm wearing) on the 3rd gen compared to Subies, VW's, etc. However, the double clutch downshift I use for dropping multiple gears works ok, so the dbw throttle isn't terrible. Just had way too much practice last night with this will travelling 90 miles on polished surfaces to pull my daughters little car out of a ditch. Lots of snow, 2 20+ car pile-ups and general mayhem of one of our two lane state highways around here. 50" of snow this week.

Think about it as three different simplified components; the engine, the trans, and the driveshaft. The clutch is the connection between the engine and the trans and the shifter is the connection between the trans and the driveshaft. Syncros ease the joining of the trans and driveshaft. Too much speed differential between the two means wear on the syncros.

Mines opposite. 4.7 in the crawler & stock ratio in the FJ case.

    Same results tho.

I usually skip gears during upshifting, rarely use 5th gear and just go from 4th to 6th.

No sir. It's a blizzard here and I do not feel like crawling under the truck. Maybe tomorrow if the storm breaks.
