I posted in the 4 cyl section, but I might as well try my luck here as well:

Does anyone know if a flywheel from a 1st gen 2.7 m/t will fit a 2nd gen 2.7 m/t? I am finding lots of flywheels for 1st gens but hardly any for 2nd gens (that aren't "performance" rated or cost an arm and a leg to ship). Additionally, a lot of the descriptions only state "for 2.7L T100, Tacoma or 4Runner." Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone done any towing with the 2016? What gear do you tow in? I have a 6x10 around 2500 lbs.

Just had something really weird happen this morning. On freeway in 4th, traffic opened up so I sped up quite a bit, RPM was probably close to 4. Clutch all the way in, move shifter to 5th and clank clank rattle, that godawful noise and no 5th (obviously didn't attempt to release clutch). Pull back down to neutral clutch still in, nope doesn't want to go back to 4th either. Clutch out, clutch in, go to 4th gear, stable, shift to 5th no problem, back to normal...

...that wasn't a very comforting experience. Anyone have any idea as to what could have happened? I didn't do anything out of the ordinary and I am sure the clutch was all the way down. Really weird....

huh, maybe a bad pilot/throwout bearing? I'm having issues with mine too currently, after a heavy off-roading weekend in which I took on a trail much too advanced for my stock height Tacoma, my transmission is making a weird, deep grunting/grinding noise whenever I shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd under high RPM's (3k or above). I was told on here that it was a clutch/pilot/throwout bearing issue most likely. If I keep my shifts under 3k it's everything appears normal.

I have it at Toyota now getting diagnosed (hopefully), I'll report back.

edit: just read that you have a 2016, I'd take it in and have them check it out since it's under warranty. Doesn't sound like something a brand new MT should be doing (or any transmission for that matter).

Couple of times, mine wouldn't go from fifth into sixth and instead wanted to go back into fourth, even though I had aligned the shift lever properly.

I'm *not* impressed with the way the M/T actually shifts. Occasionally, when shifting from second to third, I get a bit of a grinding noise. It goes into third, but still...

I've been driving stick shift vehicles my entire driving life, more than 50 years, and those experiences include Model A Ford trucks, WW II Jeeps, Triumphs, a Lotus, a BMW. The shifting mechanism on my '16 Tacoma is by far the worst. There's no reason for it to be as sloppy as it is...it isn't rocket science and it isn't because the vehicle is a truck.

This is NOT confidence inspiring. In addition to the fact, I am a MT person through and through, getting a MT 16 and giving up the Long Bed, was due to so many AT tranny issues I am hearing. Now if the MT trans is having problems too, this isn't confidence inspiring before wiring $36,000 to the dealer for a new truck :(

That is not a typical experience with the 2016 6 speed manual. Very few people have had any problems and most report that its the best manual transmission they've driven in a truck. I have 10,000 miles with no problems at all.

If you're suggesting that a 2016 Tacoma is not as smooth -shifting as a Willys or Ford truck, your transmission needs attention. Mine is incredible, and I've owned my share of manual cars & trucks as well. Good luck and I hope they get your transmission fixed up.

I've talked to the dealership about this, and when I bring it in for the 5000 mile check, they'll give it the once-over. But the service writer told me they don't "repair" transmissions if there is a problem...they replace them. I'm not sure what sort of "attention" a dealership might give to a manual transmission...in that I don't know if there are "adjustments" that can be made to the innards. I'm in the dark on that.

Unfortunately it isn't a recurring issue (I don't believe). After that incident it shifted smooth. We'll see what time says. I'm only at 3500 miles or so and it is my daily driver. If there is a real issue it will come up again. With how little the issues happen that I have had with the manual transmission, it would be impossible for a tech to recreate. The only other issue I have had is it randomly not going into 1st after coming to a stop.

I wouldn't worry. 99% of the time so far the transmission has been great and very smooth. This is the first time it clanked and rattled and wouldnt go into gear. Other than that, maybe 4 times it has not wanted to go into 1st after coming to a stop. I'm not too worried and I'm at 3500 miles so I have plenty of time to see if a real issue develops.

Makes sense, sometime manuals are a little temperamental. I've had little quirks with every one that I've owned, and my last two were on brand new cars (Scions).

I've also had the random 'not going into gear' issue too, I think that's normal for a manual trans. For me it would happen with the reverse gear more than the others. Just had to release the clutch and press it again to get it to go into gear. Rarely happened but it happened in every car (and my truck) that I've had.

The grinding noise you described is what I find concerning, but hopefully it was just a one-time ordeal (maybe the synchro didn't full line up for the gear to engage) or something like that.

It wasn't even grinding, it sounded like I hit two metal pipes together a couple times and the stick vibrated around quite a bit and rumbled. Honestly when I tried to put it back in 4th and couldn't I thought I lost the transmission.

Yep hopefully a one and done type of deal.

Test drove the manual today.... All I can say is I think i'm in love. The clutch has a very distinct brake point and does not need much pressure to keep the pedal depressed. I love the pep the truck has and the overall feel of the engine. Found it in DC OR silver. Not my first choice but I still like it.
