Have any of you with a manual transmission had any issues with first gear?

I have a 2018 TRD OR DCSB, virtually completely stock other than cosmetic cabin upgrades & a grille.

Super sporadic for me, but occasionally it is challenging/impossible to get into first gear unless I let the truck roll (even very slightly) or manhandle it into gear, which is less than ideal.

It's impossible to demonstrate to the dealer/service crew since it is quite seldom, but quite frustrating & unexpected when stopped at a light/stop sign. Wondering if I am special, or if others have encountered this & what mitigation options there may be.

So not in a Tacoma but ya my father's old ranger did this on occasion and if I put it into second then into first it went into gear way easier. Otherwise you had to slam it into first. As to why it happens, I have no clue.

Quite normal. The gear teeth don't line up to index properly OCCASIONALY. The easy fix is to clutch in and shift to 2nd and back to 1st. Or you can shift to neutral, let the clutch out and then try to shift back to 1st.

yep, yep to all of the above, drove many sticks for many years and it just becomes a habit shift into 2nd then into reverse. all in one motion do not have to let clutch out at all in 2nd.

I find it is enough just to let the clutch out in neutral and get all the shafts spinning, then you can get it into first.

It is weird because this never happened in any of the manual cars I have owned.

If you are rolling to a stop with your clutch mashed to the floor and cant grab first gear , its because of reverse powerflow .
By pushing the clutch pedal down to the floor , you are removing the powerflow from the engine , however , because the truck is still moving , the rear wheels are driving the rear differential . The rear diff drives the rear driveshaft which in turn drives the transmission output shaft .
There is no way for us to disconnect the rear driveshaft powerflow as we are decelarating . If they put a clutch on the back of the transmission , you could grab first gear at 75mph .
This ofcourse is an issue when rolling to a stop and trying to grab 1st .This complaint is more noticeable with lower gearing
If you are at a complete stop and are having issues grabbing 1st , the clutch is taking too long to stop the input shaft from turning

Lots of great feedback, many thanks to all.

Makes sense that forcing it isn't the right move, I'll do better to manage my frustration in the future ;). I'll also try out the trick with 2nd gear then back to 1st next time it happens, that'll be easy enough.

I've driven manuals exclusively my whole life (31yr old) and haven't observed this with my other vehicles (Saab, Honda, Subaru).

Thanks again all! Glad to know it's a common scenario & easily mitigated.
