Need the help of other people that own the manual transmission!
I've got about 2700 miles on my truck and have noticed it since the day I picked it up ( figured it was normal but just want to ask).
While driving if I shift into neutral and drive over a big bump like a speed bump or washboard dirt road I hear something under the truck kinda rattle. Doesn't seem to do it while in gear. Anyone else experience this or should I be worried? Thanks!

Can you elaborate on the rattle? I'm pulling from memory here but I seem to recall a slight rattle from some of my previous manual Tacomas that there was a slight rattle while in neutral while going over bumps or pot holes but this was at a low speed. I can't recall the last time I rolled over a speed bump in neutral, usually I'm in gear when doing so.

Sounds like some part of the drivetrain or transmission rattling or shaking while I go over the bumps. When the road smooths out it stops or if I'm in gear I don't seem to hear it. It's my first manual truck and I didn't notice this with my manual 07 FJC so just looking for some reassurance that it's normal or thinking about taking to to the dealer (but I'd rather not).

    I'm pretty sure it's "normal"
My 13 if in neutral an I go over bumps rattles as well.

Try this, when the truck is off slap the stick back an forth an listen to the sound. It's probably going to be the same sound you hear while driving.

I'll look into this tomorrow and check back. I don't recall hearing this but I could be wrong. I'm a big fan of neutral whenever possible so I'll keep an ear out for this

Have you tested if it's coming from the steering column?

@pocketsmcaaron have you heard what I'm describing on your truck? Notice you have the manual tranny

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Maybe lube the driveshaft u-joints and check the cat heat shield mounted to the cab floor is secure.

I have a manual and have two rattles. One sounds like a heat shield and occurs during low rpms such as when launching in 1st or 2nd, the other sounds like what you describe, a deeper rattle from the transmission when shifting gears and in neutral.

I've had the second one on other manual cars and just figured it's normal.

I have the same sound - running over bumps in the road with clutch depressed in or out of gear. Sounds like its the drive train to me and it feels like it too. Just got my 5000 mile oil change from the dealer with lube so I'll check mine again. Sounds more mechanical to me, like maybe the rear end un-loaded and rear suspension rattle from un-loaded drive train.

Just a bit of background on how the 1st gen pickups from the 80's are built, the transmission and T-case sit on a cross member with a heavy rubber bushing. I haven't crawled under my 3rd gen yet but I'll venture a guess this is nearly the exact same setup on our trucks. The transmission itself is probably shaking on this mount because I recall this happening while off-road last week. I have a tendency to throw it in neutral when coasting through flat terrain (not sure why just a bad habit)

I don't recall a noise so much as feeling the shifter shake in my hand however a slight rattling noise WAS present.

As I said before I will look more into this today when I leave the mountain and report back. From what I recall. I honestly think this is normal and not s design flaw. The components and drive train on these trucks need to be able to flex and move in at least 4 axis' to some extent. Also, try contacting Toyota about it, their service department will probably confirm this and pinpoint the rattle you're hearing.

When you are off-road or rough surface and hear the noise, do you feel any clunkiness on the steering wheel?

I haven't heard anything. But mostly been listening to the radio while driving. I'll turn it off next time OR and keep your thread posted.

I'll have to check this out over the next couple of days. I haven't noticed anything yet but also haven't done much coasting in neutral and only have about 250 miles on mine.

Mine does the same thing. 3000 miles and it's done it from the beginning. It hasn't gotten any better or any worse with mileage/time. It seems to be common, if not normal.

I don't feel any "clunkiness" in the steering wheel or shifter. Just hear a clunky rattle.

Went out during lunch on a washboard dirt road, let it ride in neutral going about 25mph, it was all quiet. Will try a rougher road another day.
