I was personally thinking that a lightly optioned OR painted in a hero color, with a manual is a great value play on Gen4.

So I like your choice, but discouraged by your experience and also what’s being communicated to you by the CS advisor.

Hopefully they wrap this up for you quickly and it’s trouble-free sailing from here. Good luck.

If they know with a high degree of certainty there is a widespread (as far as MTs) early defect, and they also know which production #s have the defect, and they can therefore ascertain that the truck in question was in that production batch....why on earth would you deliver that truck to the customer?

Don't remember where I saw it so correct me if different. Is the transmission the only part on the 4g that is built in Japan?

Curious how that could play into things like this. Japanese company, American design team, American engine, Japanese transmission, built in Mexico. Such a complex system to design, build and test.

i've never done a transmission swap, but wouldn't be worried. drive shaft out. crossmember out. shifter boot off. dozen bolts connecting to engine.. a wire or two. transmissions are not hard.

then again, i have gone through a frame swap...

but i feel your pain for needing a fix the day after buying

the lemon law has 4 qualifiers (yes unique by state but more similarities than differences) all of these are within 12-18 months. 1.) needs repair for same issue 3x, 2.) has a life threatening fix needed (brakes don't work for example), 3.) out of service for 30 days total in the first 12 months, 4.) can't remember the 4th. Anyway, I really don't want to claim lemon law, but IF it's in there for more than 30 days, and I don't trust the replacement transmission, I may have to think about it. Plus wife not trusting it, etc.

Yes but do I really trust they put a newly engineered and manufactured improved transmission in it? Or are they rolling the dice and replacing with another bad one hoping that it will last a while? I want to keep this truck, we'll see.

I’m sure they’ll fix it soon enough with a real fix. The RC62F in the third gen had a problem where it would get stuck in gear. The issue didn’t show itself immediately, but posts popped up and about a year in a detent was revised and the problem was completely fixed from them on. I’m sure they’ll make it right.

Just surprised I haven’t heard about anybody having this problem until this thread. Granted very low quantity of manuals out there, but you’d think it would be news if the situation on trucks in Cali is true. Maybe they’re keeping it quiet I guess.

Probably not an image Toyota wants to be reflective of their business. Hope they get you fixed up quickly.

    That’s crazy, how many miles?

I test drove a dealer transfer manual 4th gen that had like 120 miles didn’t notice anything funky. Then again a day one failure must be exceptionally rare in any Toyota

Picked up on Saturday at dealer 100 miles away. Car had the usual 10 miles on it. Went to dinner with wife Sunday night, and 24 hours later with <200 miles on it, the three gears disappeared.

I think Toyota has a history of doing the right thing by the customer so I would be pretty confident they will get it worked out and you'll but just fine in the end but in the mean time you are dealing with a world of S$$T.

You might as well be drafting the paperwork now. Set it aside to file on day 31. Why?

I certainly understand why anyone would be frustrated with such a situation. You bet. Lotsa bucks on the table for something unusable.

But when you don't even think there is a tech smart enough to R&R a box, and you both have trust issues.... well. You'll never be happy. At least with that particular unit.

Start talking with the GM about your upcoming options, so they are aware of your pain.

    1) nothing different may happen, but no loss other than some phone time.

    2) you may get a new trans faster, back in your hands less than 30 days, to avoid your legal options

    3) they may offer you a heck of a buyout deal and take the 'hit' of waiting themselves. I mean someone is going to want it and think they found a treasure after it's fixed.

    What’s the defect?

you gonna help us out post part numbers?

I wonder why they are sitting. There is a lot near my with 4th gen’s sitting. Like 1000 of them.

could be a port stop. Sometimes brands do that if there’s a recall that prevents sale.
Or they want to secretly get it done first in another facility before it is delivered to dealer. To avoid souring customer and potentially paying dealer which might cost them more and be a hassle in terms of waiting for limited parts availability that still have to be made and and shipped en masse when such recall comes out.

and avoid negative publicity of negative press, NHTSB finding out about it, etc.

this is disappointing because 4th gen manual trans part number was speculated to be a solution for swap into 2nd gen to replace RA60F seemingly designed by Borat Sagdiyev. Guess he still works there.
Dont know how one messes up a design that’s existed the world over the same format for over 50 years. Versus inventing a new technology.

Nobody should be dissing Borat Sagdiyev, he is one of the 21st century's greatest minds.

On a related note, I wonder if the 2024 6-spd manual trans finally fixed the decades-old Tacoma MT throwout bearing design flaw.

I'm happy to be chilling with my increasingly oldschool-ish 2nd gen 4.0L engine. I just do not see how, in any rational world, it is going to be possible for a 2.4L engine making 250+ HP to last as long as 4.0L engine making ~225-230 HP.

Higher power density = higher temperature and higher levels of force pushing on smaller total areas of piston sleeves, rod bearings, etc = probably not going to last as long. (Other factors being held equal of course, e.g. driving style, use case, maintenance intervals, etc.) Toyota's specifying 0W-20 oil for the 2024 Taco, vs. 5W-30 for 2nd gens, is just adding insult to injury.

whoops sorry meant his neighbor Nursaltan Tuliagby, he is pain in my assholes

I hope so. 3rd gen went back to serviceable TOB. don’t know why 4th gen manual trans is said to be more desireable over 3rd gen RC62F. Maybe ratios.
Maybe either is an improvement over 2nd gen RA60F. Except whatever broken ones in this thread.

Not to hijack this thread, but I also just took delivery of an OR MT on 4/4. About 270 miles so far without issues. It was out of the factory mid Feb. but in QC hold for another 1 1/2 months. So far I like it. Notchy but smooth shifting if that makes any sense. Very short 1st gear that I have to either rev high or go slow to get smoothly into 2nd but it really crawls in 4lo. High clutch engagement point (coming from a Subaru Forester MT) but that's just part of the fun getting used to a new MT.

I have to put some significant miles on it in the next few days. Will post again here if something goes wrong with the transmission.
