I wouldn’t read into it too much. This seems like someone who assumes that rpm is proportional with fuel mileage. Thankfully that isn’t the case. I can achieve 18-19 mpg at 3000 rpm while the auto loaner I borrowed got 21mpg at 70 mph max with 20 mph wind behind us helping. That sounds good, but most stock manuals would probably get the same.

1600 rpm at 65 doesn’t sound appealing at all, and I certainly wouldn’t judge the whole truck based on 1st gear either. And I think he confused short with tall. Definitely doesn’t seem to understand that tall is harder to start out with.

    Whaaat?

Have you ever tried to start with a 5,000 lb trailer attached to the truck on any kind of uphill incline?

That's what the very tall 1st gear is for. It's a truck.

It’s reverse that’s the issue in these trucks

Small correction- the 2023 manual sticker shows 17 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Geared too high? I'm shopping now and interested in MT. I used to have an '12 Xterra with 6MT, reverse was too high, always used 4-low when backing with a trailer, especially uphill. The other half of the problem was the clutch.

Well I have never owned a manual truck before and I have only had it since Saturday but I would like to think that I am a pretty good manual driver. I also never had anytime by myself to go for a good rip yet. The odd time I would down shift mostly to 2nd there was no grinding noise but I felt like a grinding in my foot as the clutch was in. People said that its a different manual and takes a bit to get used to. I just got home from a small drive by myself and I honestly think it was just me not being used to it. Seems like maybe I was down shifting to 2nd to early cuz on my drive I played around with it and everything was perfect. I understand that it's a truck and prob makes more noises then any of the manual sports cars I have had. I guess after I read the post about the fella whose tranmission went so early on I got really worried. As well maybe the truck has to learn to your driving habits not that I am a hard driver by any means. But I am happy to report that I think it's gonna be alright alright alright...

I find it's different than any other manual I have ever drove. I think it's a nicer driving truck than my 18 pro.

I wondered that when I found out about the throw out bearing screw up in my 2008. I mean, Toyota had made stick shift trucks for 60 years before that. When did they forget how to do it?

Sorry but my Taco is at the dealer, where it's been the last few weeks and likely to be for a while, I didn't view the build date in the 24 hours I had it.

Thank you. Yes, I did start the lemon law process, it is currently in the Toyota review process. I've asked them to keep going down parellel paths until they have a solid ETA on the repair. They are moving down both paths for now. Getting more frustrated every day.

Curious to see how this turns out. I've only owned manual cars/trucks/SUVs since I first got my license and I recall the FJs had a throwout bearing issue (and the same with the Tacoma) but 3rd grn fixed that one... Sad to heard the 4th has a whole new issue!

    hey, y’all!

I found this thread after I saw a post on reddit about gear grinding noises and clutch issues in 2nd. I told that fellow I’d take mine down the backroads to listen/feel for it, but I haven’t had those issues (yet!).

I’ve put 800 miles on the odometer since I bought it off the lot 4/19

I live rurally with a lot of mud and gravel roads, farms and orchards but 500 of those miles were done during a 9 hour drive from the LA area back home to the mountains.

I ran the gamut of bumper to bumper traffic, accidents & sudden stops.
Finished with a 30 mile switchback up into the mountains and down to the lake.

My observations on shifting have been that the truck does not like a heavy foot on the clutch, keeping it pressed hard to the floor is a no go - depress it fully and quickly - and the faster my hand is on the knob, the better.

    Few things on gears:

1st gear is interesting - It’s true that it “hates” staying there and wants you to shift to 2nd…. If you’re accelerating quickly.

That said, I can smoothly and quietly stay in 1st on the farm, parking lots, checking the mail, etc…. By keeping acceleration smooth.

It starts to ask me for 2nd around 9mph - unless I’m staying below 20mph, I get up and out of 2nd as quickly as possible.

Most noticeable and most annoying when turning from a stop at a high speed intersection with folks riding your ass, as the instinct is to try and get back up to speed by giving it too much gas for the gear, which helps no one.

However, this doesn’t bother me much now that I understand what it feels like - and it’s really useful getting up to speed at short on ramps, and when I’m trying to get back on the road after pulling to the side.

I have no issues with 3rd-5th gear and am having a lot of fun.

This is my first new vehicle, ever and I initially had some worries. Now that the truck and I have acclimated to one another, it’s better and better.

I learned to drive as a teen on an old manual toyota truck, and have since only driven similarly old manuals since, so I hope it stays this way!
