I was a Toyota tech and my Uncle was a Toyota Master Lead Tech for 30 something years, we're disagreeing with you.

I'd take a video of my trans making the same noise but I don't like damaging it by forcing it into 1st at 25mph.

The nice thing about being a tech is that while you can't fix stupid you can charge for it.

    Good luck Chuck.

So put it in gear at 15, 10, or 5... The noise persists at that speeds as well.

My uncle played professional tennis, doesn't mean I can.

The responses have been spot on. The noise you hear is normal. Are you expecting there to be no noise created when you are stuffing the shifter into Ist unnecessarily? Hopefully you can get past this self created issue and move on to rotating and re-torquing the tire valve stem caps. There is nothing wrong with the truck from the shifter knob down.

I'm pretty sure they know better than you or anyone in this thread, as they have driven it first hand, and not listened to a poor quality video online. That's my fault, but I'm limited to the phone I have.

The dealer isn't making any off me, as the diagnosis is free of charge, and wouldn't get the thing service rep involved if it was as simple as adjusting my driving technique.

Everyone wants to keep pointing to 20-25 mph downshift, but this noise occurs as low as 5 mph, with the clutch in.

Like I said, I do value everyone's opinion, and I've shared several of the thoughts on here with my service advisors, and they still believe the noise is too loud, to the point that is being referred to regional.

So thank you for sharing, but please stop. It's not helpful. Thanks.

As a Toyota tech, I can tell you that just cause a tech says something, doesn't mean it's right. Being a Toyota tech is good, but actually having ASE's or training in the specific area is what makes it count. Just fyi. No one is saying you're a bad driver or don't know how to drive or that you'll trash your truck (I think, I'm not saying that at least) We're just telling you the noise is normal and can be solved by not downshifting so soon. Even on bikes I've never used first to engine brake, unless I'm at a stand still, 2nd is the ticket always. Trucks, bikes, cars, and otherwise. The purpose of first gear is to get the vehicle moving. Obvious exceptions if you slow to like 3mph... use first... ha

All the tech's at my dealer are ASE certified. Condition of employment for them. I trust their opinion, and I trust the fact I've had a transmission make a very similar noise due to the synchro being damaged by a previous owner.

I appreciate that you're being respectful. I'm trying to as well. But it really does discourage independent thinking when several members create an echo chamber, and some of them (not you) are antagonistic about it.

    Thanks for your opinion.

The reps are normally very skilled in "handling" situations like this. To get you to go away, you'll probably be invited to drive other trucks on the used lot to prove nothing is wrong. Good luck!

I'm in the technique camp on this one...needs finesse

Apparently credentials are required here...just shy of 1M kms (600K miles) of rowing my own...alot of those floating the gears.

So, to beat this dead horse, OP, try to float into 1st gear (no clutch) and let us know what engine RPM is required to do so. Make no mistake, it can be done...but I think you will be quite surprised at the RPM you will have to hit to get it to float in...

This is TW bro, peeps are here to help...not hinder.

Wise peeps always, ALWAYS ask themselves..."-what if I'm wrong?" Even when they think they are 100% right

    Good luck!

Those same techs likely have no experience in a manual transmission Tacoma. Let alone downshifting into first gear at any speed other than stopped. They are also probably going to get into an automatic transmission car and drive home. With all this experience of manual transmissions, maybe you should help out the poor synchro's by double clutching when downshifting?

    Yeah.
Not jumping on the group think, but I've never had a manual that I downshifted into 1st while moving at any kind of speed. I've only used 1st for starting from a stop or barely rolling. I have no idea what it would sound like since I've never done it. Once you've engine braked down through 2nd, you are going pretty slow, and can start off in 2nd from a pretty low speed without bogging. Not sure how tall 1st is on a 3rd gen, though.

This is CORRECT and extremely important in the MT GL4 ONLY.

OP change the gear oil ASAP with GL4
Go ahead and ask the shop what did they use,
Dont accept GL5 "will be alright"
Tell them you have a whine cause by syncro gear wearing!
