Parking brake is on always when parked. I add putting it in gear when I know there's an incline even ever so slightly.

In gear with the emergency brake on here, even on level surfaces.

The only time I'd leave a vehicle in neutral is if I had wheel chocks, and that was just when I was storing a vehicle long term without the parking brake on.

When I had my automatic '13 I'd park with the truck in park and the foot automated emergency brake on to reduce the parking pawl on the auto. That was just me though, as it became second nature.

Yeah I always use the e-brake on my auto to reduce/eliminate torque lock on the tranny. I just hate the position of the e-brake....I'd much rather have a T-handle.

Thanks for the replies (sorry for hijacking the thread). Guess I should start getting into the habit of putting it in gear as well.

My 92 Pickup 22re did this as well, I woke up one morning to find my truck gone, stolen I thought.

It was down the street (I live on a slight hill) about 5 houses down on the other side of the street with the drivers side rear tire up against the curb

Was pretty embarrassing my neighbors probably thought I was drunk or something

Correction: always use the ebrake, regardless of the transmission type. It's a good habit to have, and will provide a safety margin in any vehicle you happen to drive, without having to think about it.

All those recent issues with Jeep Cherokees being accidentally put into N instead of P and then rolling and killing their drivers? Yeah, use the ebrake and that shit won't happen.

I've always pulled my e-brake and left it in gear. Even when I've owned auto's I used the e-brake...some habits die hard.

With all my other MT trucks, I've always just put them in 1st when I parked, unless on an incline. This is the first MT truck that I've ever used the parking brake regularly.

In my 20's I only owned manual vehicles. Now that im in my 30's i found myself wanting something simpler to drive so i got an automatic on my 2017 Tacoma.
In terms of how to park a manual here is what i have learned. I used to have a subaru STi, it's valve train was driven by a timing belt. that belt had tensioners on it t keep the belt tight. The problem was that the tensioners only worked when the engine spun in a certain direction, and infact would loosen if the engine was spun in reverse. This caused one of the cams on my engine tto lose timing and cause all kind of issues. So to that prevent that from happeneing again I would always use a parking brake and leave it in gear. if facing up hill i would park in reverse, if down hill i would park in first, so that if it did cause the engine to spin it would at least spin in the right direction. This probably isnt as big a deal for engines with timing chains but i still believe it to be the safest option.

Always use the e-brake on an automatic as well. The parking pawl is a tiny little thing.

I leave my MT in gear and use the E brake. All the time, its a "Belt and Suspenders "type of thing. Plus the E brake likes to be used so it does not seize.

I've always left in gear and and used the e brake. Even doing this my moms Subaru Outback would roll down the driveway every once in a while, and my WRX would inch backwards and set off the alarm. Maybe it's just my experience but it seems like the handbrake works better when the rear brakes are drums.

It's strange going to a vehicle without the t handle. It's even weirder when someone gets in the truck and notices the handle when I release it, and they're like "wtf is that thing??" I forget that it's basically unique to toyota pickups. I'm like "duh it's the e brake wtf did you think it was"

I've never messed with rear disc e brakes, but I've HEARD because of the fundamental design, they suck ass, and drums are WAY better when it comes to e brakes.

I always leave mine in first and always set the parking brake. Did not used to and one time I came out of a store and found it had rolled back several feet. Fortunately, it did not crash into anything. Not sure what happened, but assumed I failed to get it all the way into gear and it slipped out. So now, I put is in first and set the parking brake. Ironically, I do not set the parking brake when driving automatics except if parking on a steep incline.
