I’ve noticed a gear whine (that is loud enough i initially thought it was the engine fan) in first gear, thats louder with more RPM. Sounds similar to the normal gear whine you get in reverse in almost any car. Doesn’t happen in 2-6. I’ve had a few stick shifts and none made whining noises like that in forward gears.

Crawled under the truck, All fluids are level

Took it to the dealer and they said they didn’t hear it
(I’ve also got the dreaded diff howl, for which they want the toyota engineers to look at)

I’ve also noticed the gear selector is super noisy, can hear it with the windows down or sometimes from the rear as i row through the first few gears

Anyhow, is this stuff normal for the tacoma stick shift?

Most likely straight cut gears for 1st (stronger gears are straight cut, like reverse). See if you can find another 6MT and compare.

As for shifter noise, you are literally shifting directly connected to the transmission. Sound is going to resonate through the lever, and you're going to hear the gear changes. As long as it's smooth and not a crunch, you're fine.

Exactly this. You notice the whine in bikes as well. First gear straight cut to handle all the torques.

Haha apologies, i swear i searched for it!!!

I’ve had other manual transmissioned vehicles that didn’t whine like this, but straight cut gears would do it!

& Same with the shifter noise — My BMWs didnt do it, though of course those are more premium — but neither did my 91 silverado, and that transmission was rather.... agricultural. If thats just how these are that’s fine, i just wanted to make sure there wasn’t something wrong with mine.
    Thanks for the quick replies

:cheers:No problem, you've obviously never heard the musical 5MT transmission in the 2005+ Legacy GT. 1st and 2nd were straight-ish cut gears, and they wined like a Short Track race car transmission on heavy acceleration...:burnrubber:

Though not straight-cut, the tooth pitch is probably more of a hybrid between straight cut & helical... e.g. a Muncie M22.

Weird. Mine doesn’t whine dammit. Taking it to the dealer - they better not tell me it’s normal.

I've got the same thing going on. As others have said it is completely normal due to the straight cut for 1st. Nothing to be worried about!
As for the diff howl, I have been lucky not to have that issue.

Same here. If mine does this, I’ve never noticed it.

Same here. When I hear it, it makes me think of a gated MT.
