i have a 4 cylinder 5 speed combo and have not had any troubles, but the truck only has 8k miles on it. Have heard nothing but bad things about the 6 speed though

I think that is pretty normal...
I hear that the 6-speed trans in the newer tacomas suck.

You could always try some Redline oil in it. They say it's supposed to help the sychros somehow. I have some Redline for mine, but have yet to try it. Waiting unitl I get around to installing the new clutch first. 2nd through 4rth is a bit chunky, and mine is an '01 5spd R150.

I'm sure they know about it. Has there been any recalls on them?

You might want to install a URD short throw shifter. I have the 2.7 with a 5 speed and it sure took almost all the slush out of the shift.

I'll have to look into those suggestions. They sound good to me.

I recently got a new 6-speed and I must say it's the roughest manual I've ever driven, and I've driven quite a few

I have 102K on my '06 with the TRD short throw shifter.
It was starting to feel a little notchy going into gear but then I changed fluid and it's back to working great.
