2020 Toyota Tacoma manual. Accidentally shifted from 5th to 2nd going 45mph. Was shooting for 4th gear. Made a skid tire sound in a matter of seconds, depressed the clutch right away. Wondering if I damaged anything.

It is my understanding neither the engines in the 3G Tacoma (2TR-FE and 2GR-FKS) are not interference engines, so there is a good chance the only thing you damaged was your ego. :)

Aside from burning a little life off your clutch, if you damaged anything you would know it already. If it shifts normally now, you are fine. Were you trying to speed shift? I have to think it felt and sounded really off as the syncros tried to catch up the the rev difference. Personally I find these trucks are happiest when my shifts are deliberate and relatively slow.

I was down shifting to 4th cuz traffic was slowing down a little. Accidentally pop it into 2nd, I still had my foot on the clutch, was able to reengage after less than a second tire skid.

Many of my previous cars had interference engines and in communities associated with those vehicles, this type of a shift is called, the "Money Shift". Why? Piston to valve contact is almost assured which in turn requires pulling the head(s) and reconditioning the valve train.

You are fine man. Now if you do this 20 more times, something might break.

I believe the term originated with the early 2000s Celica GT-S where it was super easy to catch 2nd gear when trying to go 3 > 4 .

That might be when the phrase caught on, but I'm pretty sure I remember it from the 1980s.

I highly doubt the 2GR-FKS is a non-interference motor. Most cars that are non-interference have quite low compression ratios like 8-10:1, the tacoma has a 11.8:1 so I would assume it is interference.

    Also, 2GR-FEs are interference motors.

Interference or not has nothing to do with over “revving” an engine.
That said 45mph in 2nd sounds fine

these trucks will do nearly 75 mph in 2nd gear. unless you were going faster than that then there was no chance you hurt anything. these engines are good up to about 7500rpm then the lash adjusters collapse and you start throwing rocker arms. which in most cases isnt the end of the world.

I did the same a couple years ago, but going closer to 60 or 65. Interesting sensation. Everything still works fine.

I have done this before and you’ll start noticing all the subtle noises through the rpm ranges thinking does this sound the same. You’ll be fine though.
