Not necessarily true. If she stopped 6 inches from his bumper, then yeah she should be responsible. But if she was 2 feet from his car and he couldn’t figure out how to engage the clutch in time to prevent rollback, then he is at fault.

I have a different perspective on this; last week my Tacoma got hit by a woman in her late 20s or early 30s just learning how to drive; she was parked behind my spotless 2022 TRD Sport, which was parked in it's assigned parking place when she accidentally hit the gas in her little KIA and did nearly $8,100 of damage to my truck. My take on this is if she was driving a stick she would have been more aware of what the hell she was doing, and this wouldn't have happened.

My neighbor's kid [21] just got a 2018 MT Civic with hill hold and shit, so it doesn't roll back..
I forced him to drive my Tacoma [no hill hold] to see how badly he would roll back..
He did okay, not great but okay.
I'm gonna make him do it again next month and the month after that till he gets it right because I don't want him getting in an older MT car, thinking it is gonna hold and rolling back/hitting someone.

Otherwise, he is doing good in the MT

    Nope.
    Never.
    Never even had the thought.
I never had auto gearboxes and can't drive them... the autos may as well not exist...

All other vehicles at home are now electric. I'll give up the manual gladly for an off road capable EV when the time (and the off road capable EV) comes

    Same here.
I've shipped cars to buyers across the country and abroad BECAUSE of the manual transmission... (implying even more cost to the buyers - *because* of the manual).

May as well hand in my man(ual) card, I have on occasion wondered if I would have preferred an automatic. I don’t have the “one with the machine” feeling with this as I have with others. A year and a half later it’s just kind of awkward and uncoordinated, both of us trying to predict what the other is going to do next (and missing the mark by a hair most of the time). Tuning has helped substantially, but given I live in the straight road’ed flatlands for now; well I am still not sure about this.

My 16 year old grand daughter bought her first car as a stick shift.
    This did Grampa proud.

However, it is a Honda, and has that silly push button parking brake release.
She has no lever to hold while rolling the foot from brake to gas pedal.
Honda requires the brake pedal be pushed firmly before it will allow the parking brake to release.

    I hate nanny cars.

Anyone else who regularly drives a manual hop in an auto and find your left foot uselessly tapping the floor for the clutch? Happens to me everytime I hop in the ol' automatic Honda. There's always a couple seconds of confusion.

Dude rolled back a good half car length while blipping the throttle, I don’t know how many feet you’re supposed to be stopped at a stoplight for it to be considered not “too close.” Both insurance company and police report are taking her side because of video evidence.

Happened to me yesterday, I took my Tacoma in to get the damage I posted about upthread repaired and the rental is a Camry:
    • Left foot stomping the floor while trying to start the engine, duh!
    • Left foot stomping the floor while trying to put it into "gear" (does this thing have a CVT?), duh!
    • Left foot stomped the brake once while approaching a stop light, duh!

If you're a skilled MT driver then the "awkward and uncoordinated" you mention is likely due to the accumulator. Tuning won't remove the randomness of your shifts as long as the accumulator is installed. You may want to take a look at the various threads here in the forum and see if that might allow you to enjoy your truck. It did wonders for a lot of us around here.

I feel alive again since picking up my MT 22 OR a couple of months ago. I do not miss automatic at all. I do agree that I feel slower off the line but overall I drive faster because it is more fun to drive. I am constantly getting into my other family vehicles and trying to mash the clutch pedal and then I am reminded how much I love the MT and miss it. I find myself with my hand on the "shifter" even when I am in the automatics. My boys are going to be in the handful of young adults that will be able to drive a MT once they come of age. That and they will know how to properly parallel park and how to do it with an MT on a hill no less. Wussies today don't even want to drive. I don't get it.

Most of our vehicles have been manual. Even a 2004 BMW X5. That car had a CDV (clutch delay valve) that everybody insisted it would drive better without. I had it removed and didn’t understand what they were talking about. I’ve kept the accumulator on my truck because I can’t find any fault with how it shifts. It performs exactly how I would expect and want it to. I’m not sure where some of the complaints on here come from. The hardest manual I have ever driven was a 1985 Dodge Lancer. The shifter was clunky, hard to find the right spot for the 2nd to 3rd-had to be in exactly the right position, and the extremely stiff clutch engagement was at the very top over about 1/2 in. That thing was a bucking bronco like no other unless you were perfect with it. When I got ready to sell that thing a guy who had driven many manuals in his life wanted it so badly but he said it was just impossible to drive. I had to donate it. I taught both our kids to drive manuals. My son is already looking forward to finding a manual car when the time comes for him to buy his own. He has even taught a friend how to drive them. Although that was on my 328 BMW and that did not make me happy…he did the whole mom said it was OK thing lol. The end

I kept my accumulator on. I just don’t have a problem with it.

And if anybody wants to learn how to drive a stick shift, I will teach them with my truck. So, the accumulator stays on.

Can I just borrow your truck because I miss manual transmissions. I gave in back in 2021 and bought automatic since I was too busy at work hunting for a stick shift.

When my trans is done, I will figure out how to convert it. Done it with my 90’s Hondas back in the day.

I actually have a delete disc sitting in my garage waiting for me to get to it. But I think it’s an issue with throttle response from DBW and ergonomics - I have to kick my left knee out to clear the steering wheel and the friction point is high enough I am modulating with just my ankle and not my whole leg..the latter being the thing I don’t have 20 years of muscle memory built up for, plus I am usually in heavier boots which probably doesn’t help..

I have a friend who has a 21 OR auto. Same configuration as my truck but he has a long bed. Just for kicks, we raced off from a stoplight and he beat me off the line but as soon as I wound my RPM's up to 3k-ish I pulled ahead of him (15 to 20 mph in 1st gear, I think, then a shift to 2nd around 20mph, then leave it in second until 45 to 50mph)

I was in a similar situation with my 62 Chevy panel van. 4 on the floor and you better be sure the clutch was fully depressed for a shift or I would grind gears. Also, it took some muscle to push that pedal fully down to the floor.

I'm the same. I don't get the complaints regarding the accumulator, but maybe I don't know what I'm missing. This is my sixth manual and the easiest I've ever had. Compared to my others manuals, this truck is so smooth it's like a knife in hot butter. When I fully depress the clutch and get the rpm's correct, it literally just drops into gear.

With my 62 Chevy, it was such a bear to drive some days I just really wouldn't look forward to driving it (no power steering and a heavy duty old-school clutch). With my new Tacoma, sometimes I find excuses just to get behind the wheel.

The wait is pretty long for manual transmission Tacomas back when I was waiting for my truck at 2022. I despise automatics, so I contemplated on buying a beater manual truck while I wait for one. That was the plan until I received an allocation for my white truck.

I drove a truck with its accumulator deleted. I get how it allows more feeling of the clutch, but I struggle to be motivated to delete the accumulator. It doesn’t have enough of a benefit for me.

I found my truck easy to drive from the factory even with its accumulator left on.
