    One other comment, although the Tacoma 4wd doesn’t always engage on or off instantly, it can be “shifted” on the fly. Which just involves turning a knob on the dash. So if you have patchy snow conditions, it’s easy to shift in and out as needed. Try to do this when going straight and lift off the throttle, like you’re shifting an MT. You can do this up to 60-60 mph, which is probably as fast as you’d want to go if you need 4wd. Though even the older trucks were pretty easy to shift with the lever. As someone else said, you’ll notice the binding in 4wd on high traction surfaces, long before you damage anything.

    As the other guy said, as long as you have slippage you can do it. I drove 55 the whole way to work one snow morning. Just be careful with those turns.
