Hills in Monterey are a nightmare. I’ve only owned manuals there and ughhhhh. Going through PG or getting stopped a light heading up to the presidio... the worst.

When I was helping my daughter (who had no idea how to drive a manual but multiple autos) was buying her first car I pretty much told her that she was going to be getting a MT and she would be fine. Cheaper and requires more proficiency to actually just drive. So we helped her with the co-signing process and she got her car.

The first two days of teaching her were a little rough, she hated the process at first. Once she figured it out though, she absolutely loves it and thanks me for pushing her to be different than all her non manual driving friends. Lol. She enjoys driving and refuses to buy an auto in the next vehicle she buys.

She even goes to school in Morgantown, WV and loves driving there. For those who don’t know what Morgantown is like, it is basically a very big university built into the side of the mountain and is full of steep and interesting driving.

She has now started driving my truck some when she comes home and loves the hell out of my Taco.

The light by Life Science building is new clutch central.

I’ll be back in Morgantown by year end. If you’re ever up, shoot me a DM / post in the WV thread!

Drove an '18 SR5 Auto and I can't imagine that tranny will last very long with the excessive amounts of shifting up and down. I was impressed by how low the RPMs were which is definitely good for gas mileage but I also can't expect the engines too last long either running T such low RPMs constantly.

I drove a 2.7 2007 Manual Tacoma for almost ten years, and through hard Bay commuter traffic. went to almost 200K mile with no issues. No slipping clutch, and I never had to change anything.

In my 2017 Manual, I have tendency to grind the gears. It's a funky feeling transmission as well.

Everyone needs to read this 2-3 times. I’m a MT guy through and through, but the longer I drive my 2.7 3rd gen MT, the more I’m starting to feel the same. I love manuals, but with how heavy these trucks are (and how much they lack low end torque), the clutch does take a hit even being a skilled shifter.

Sports cars are light and in the ones I’ve driven - have plenty of low end making it a lot easier on the clutch. 1st gen Tacoma’s were a no brainer - manual like the poster above me has mentioned. But the 3rd gens manual just doesn’t feel right for the truck. Probably because the truck is just too damn heavy now. Would a bigger power plant solve it? Not sure, but current Tacos in manual (to me) just don’t feel the same as the old ones where Toyota made itself a household name in reliability. The 3.5 is a little better, I test drove it, but was still clunky and just didn’t feel right.

I hate to say it too but - I may trade my 2.7 in for an automatic 3.5. I love manual, just starting to see if it’s not a sports car, diesel,
or a super light commuter, AT may cost less down the road. I feel horrible driving this girl any faster than grandma speeds - I know she struggles and it saddens me lol.

This is coming from a manual purist, and I hate to say it.

I didn’t have much problem at sea level, but at altitude the 3.5l seriously lacks low-down torque - making me have to slip the clutch much more than i would like, especially uphill, and even more tragically in reverse. Thinking that 2-lo mod will be necessary if i want to save my clutch

i purchased a subaru impreza with the 5 speed because they were reliable. But with alot of stop and go traffic in Atlanta, it wears things out sooner rather than later so 70k my throwout bearing was making noises. Based on the traffic and type of driving encountered i would have been better off with an auto. I love driving a manual but in stop and go it sucks. Also not that fun when you fracture your right ankle and have 200 miles to drive back home.

Here's the vid of a Toyota's AT over heating off road during a shoot out.

Don't buy that junk because you're scared of a third pedal.

Can you roll start an AT on a dead battery?

Can you go WOT in a gear without down shifting in AT?

Have you ever heard of anyone's car totalled cause the MT went out?

I spent 4.5yrs in a 1.5hr (on a good day) one way stop-n-go commute in our saab. That was about 60k just commuting. We sold it to a neighbor 6yrs ago with 140k on it at the time. The thing is still running on the original clutch. The neighbor bought it for their 16yr old.

The 1st gear speed in the Taco at idle is about half of what the saab's was. Creeping along in stop-n-go is about as joyful as it can get. I will get annoyed on hills sometimes until I remember how miserable ATs are and riding the brakes all day long.

    Nope!

Yeah you don't have to clutch much if you know how to drive it. In 1st at 900 rpm it just creeps at 1 mph no shifting. As long as you're not tailgating, you're fine.

That is exactly it. With the TSB tune or esp OVT, idle is enough. Now with the 2LM, I can creep up my driveway without touching the pedals.
