Clutch disk was fine but the throwout bearing failed prematurely i suppose. my point was reliability isnt exactly one side or the other. Ive had mulitple autos go 200k+ with nothing but fluid maintenance. Boring yes, but best for certain situations is the key.

    This is true.

Also, TOBs can burn due to bad setup from the factory. It was a noted problem on 2nd Gens and a couple 3rd Gens.

didn't know that about AT. How are you going to get it up to 40 mph with a dead battery though? MT i'm pretty sure rolling 5mph in 2nd will get ya started.

Edit: people scrap their ride and buy a new one all the time when their AT goes out. Just happened to my buddy on his Civic. Never heard of it on a MT. Just sayin'

Idling in gear with clutch pedal in puts wear on the bearing, a lot more clock time than each shift. It's a manual, you have to shift into neutral and let out the pedal. Each has benefits but the trend is away from cognitive driving, most just want point/shoot. Makes EV's look inevitable.

Reverting you all to Reply #119; this answers the off-topic, "MT is better than AT" argument.
You cannot roll/bump start an AT
You cannot go WOT without down-shifting an AT (unless you've manu-matic or some other semi-automatic transmission). Although even semi-auto transmissions like a Kia Soul (the only vehicle I've driven with such a thing) forces a shift before redline.
And no, I have not heard of a manual transmission forcing insurance to deem a vehicle a total loss.

    Good points @grubburg

The joys of manual transmissions may be construed as what makes the manual transmission (in any vehicle) more reliable. Because when something is reliable, we are happier for a longer time; thus the reliability of a thing is shown through the anecdotes of owning manual transmission vehicles.

Edit: I have no first-hand experience in any newer Tacoma transmissions. Just so those who like this post, @trackdaybro and @Mrtacoman88 understand; I am just :stirthepot:.

I think the throw-out bearing in the 3rd gen spins all the time. It's a full contact bearing and I heard it prolongs bearing life.

Im aware, my porsche hasnt had any manual trans problems. In the end it didnt matter since they had to put a new small block in the subaru due to a manuf defect and then it was totaled by a nice lady who thought it was better to be on her phone than not rear end my car. The car was a nighmare and ill never buy another

    I can start/bump start a MT at 5MPH

Does "locking in the gear" work on Tacoma Automatic Transmissions, and do they actually not shift at redline?

Because the inner workings of an AT are much more complex than that of an MT:
When we think about reliability, we have to consider how much labor is involved in making repairs. I argue that the sooner a repair is able to be completed, makes a thing more reliable by design and by construction.

Just throwing unfounded arguments out there:
    • Testing driving a MT should present actual issues fairly quickly as the inner-workings are more simple than an AT, which may mean
    • ATs may have problems unforeseen (when buying used), that a test drive won't uncover and 10,000mi later we're in a pickle.
    • Repairing blown ATs can easily cost more than the car's worth, however
    • If it's a new truck, why would the AT be blown out, and if it is, it's probably under a TSB and warranty.
    • If a blown AT comes about after the warranty, I'm willing to bet the car isn't worth much more than the cost of repairs.
But what do I know? I'm just :stirthepot:.

Edit: OP is buying a new truck, so most of the used surprises won't be a problem for them.

Toyota puts bulletproof automatics in their trucks. I know of an '05 Tacoma with more than 280k miles, used as a work truck, that likely never had its fluid changed (owner was very bad with maintenance) and the thing still runs like new. I drove it last Christmas and was blown away... no slipping, no jerks, still works like a top. We also had an '02 Tundra with a little over 200k miles, never changed the transmission fluid and never had a single issue with the transmission. There's also the legendary million mile Tundra, supposedly with the original auto transmission.

As for difference in lifespan between the two transmissions, who knows... manuals are simpler and have fewer parts to break, but they do have components that wear out... like synchros.

MT doesn't need a cooler so that's one set of hoses problems eliminated. I'd buy an auto again if I needed one(i.e. lots of towing) but I'm enjoying the change back to what I've driven most of my life.

I've got an auto '06 with 279,000 miles. I ALMOST had a major transmission issue until I was able to have a local mechanic check my flex plate which was cracked in a number of places. The truck feels great again and the loud knocking sound is now gone! @RecklessTaco also has near the same amount of miles on his auto '08 and hasn't had ANY transmission problems yet. I'm hoping to get lots more life out of it- but who wouldn't hope for that huh?

Its a set of hoses and cooling fins a manny doesn't have or need. Just because yours were problem free doesn't mean all of them are, they can and do fail occasionally. Plus the fact that it even needs cooling, clog it up with mud and even if it doesn't leak it won't do the job.

I think that right there is all anyone needs to know about the quality of automatics Toyota puts in their trucks.
