    Manual.

4.3 axle ratio (1st gear 4 lo, nuff said), no hunting for gears, able to utilize the power band properly on demand, pure control over the truck, I don't have a limp wrist, the manual transmission in the truck is smooth and nice, cheaper compared to the auto, easier to maintain, people aren't asking to borrow my truck, petty theft control, and I am so against the push towards autonomous driving and the loss of actually driving a car/truck.

I live in a high traffic major city and it is absolutely no inconvenience to drive in traffic.

How do I know what gears are on a build sheet. I ordered a 2017 a couple weeks ago and I can't tell on the build sheet. I will be driving a lot of miles per year so mileage is a concern. Are 4.30 the best option.

4.30 for fun, towing and offroading. 3.90 for mileage.

Auto has 3.90 manual has 4.30.

Guess I am in for 4.30 because I want a manual. What kind of highway miles can I expect?

They offered an upper trim level with a 6-speed. How can I say no? Also, 4.30 gears, makes it feel a bit more peppy and tows like a dream.

Depends what highway speed and what mods to the truck. Stock I would guess over 20 if you are below 65, over 65 you will be 17 to 19. If you lift and add larger tires it will all depends on your setup.

Everyone is referring to the 3.5L and not the 2.7L.

The 2.7L 5MT is a great buy too, and the only option I'd consider going with the 2.7L.

A lot of guys are averaging a solid 23mpg in the 4x4 5MT. Obviously this truck only appeals to a few minority, being an AC but it's the best buy in all Tacomas.

On my 30 mile highway commute in san diego (couple hills) I can get 20+ mpg no problem, 95% highway at 70-80 mph. Max 22 mpg, never seen higher

    With the 2.7 I-4 it's 3.90 ratio with 5 speed manual , 4.30 ratio with the auto. Opposite of the 3.5 V-6

    Mostly stuff I built.
I'm on stock tires and average 20.5+/- with mine and I drive 65-70. 60 mile commute every day mixed city and highway. I am about 300-500ft above sea level here, run ethanol free fuel and keep the tires at 35 psi cold.

Manual. Go through less brakes, more fun to drive, better for wheeling

Mines auto but use mainly for offroad. If it's a third gen it won't matter you'll be pushing it.

Auto, because I shifted gears for 35 years, so the time had come to put it in gear and go.

im a manual kind of guy but i got an auto..... trd AC off road didnt come in manual and i wanted the locking diff... i was kinda bummed not having manual at first but there is advantages and disadvantages to both... i would say better gas milage for the auto. i really like the gear ratio 3.90 driving on the highway with my auto trans. S-4 is nice and ECT button is a good option too..... but no transmission is gonna drive exactly like u want it.. my truck transmission drove like shit pre TSB update...but . After the TSB update i think it drives really good. its weakness are when going at slow speeds around 30-40 miles per hour.. if your looking to always really being engaged with the truck and the road,... buy a manual.... if u wanna more chill driving, get really good gas milage, and have rad autotrans only options only like the gear limiter, S-4 mode and ECT button, crawl control, push button start ....get an auto. either way this truck is fuckin badass. i love my truck

If someone is genuinely asking than they need to just buy the automatic. People drive manuals for one of three reasons.

    - It's all they have/can get
    - They prefer the mechanical interface with the vehicle
    - They live in any country other than America

I for one love my manual transmission. I plan on buying vehicles that have manuals in them for as I possibly can. Have I owned autos? Yes. But those have never been choices based on desire.
But my love of rowing through the gears in no way should impact your decision. There is noting worse than hating part of your vehicle. Especially something as mission critical as the transmission (see what I did there).
