Just my .02 if you want to drive 85 this is not a great vehicle to do it in. Gas mileage sucks.

I just get out of fast mode when I'm in the truck. I go 75 or a little over (depending on speed limit of course). If I'm towing anything I'm rarely over 65.

You're probably gonna say you live out west where it's 200 miles between towns, gotta drive 85 or never get there. If driving fast was my goal, I'd probably get another vehicle maybe with a 4L turbo.

appreciate your 0.02. and you are obviously correct about the mileage. but I'm here to tell you if it's setup right this vehicle is a total dream at speed, above 85. amazing, on the highway actually.

Well it is comfortable and pretty quiet, I agree. It's not unpleasant, it's just that the gas mileage stinks.

Reviving this dead thread to say I own a 2021 SX with automatic trans and just test drove a TRD Sport with manual trans today and boy oh boy do I regret the automatic. Almost every complaint I have about how my SX drives does not exist on the manual transmission.

On the automatic, throttle response is very sluggish and the transmission seems apprehensive about what it wants to do from a dead stop or just when accelerating within a range. The transmission is indecisive and results in a very jerky ride.

On the manual, throttle response is a little sluggish but nowhere near as bad as the automatic. There is also no more jerking when feathering the gas while coasting --which in the automatic is a 50/50 whether the pedal will need depressed another 3" before accelerating, or your neck snapping due to the transmission violently engaging.

The whole experience has me considering the bonehead move of taking a brand new paid off truck and trading in toward another brand newer and not paid off truck that costs slightly more... :bananadead:

True. Not in the picture for most. A torque converor sure does make it nice in the rocks. I do love the direct power of a manual though.

I have been driving the manual Tacoma for about a year. It is a pretty satisfying experience coming from an Evo x. I didn't want to get the automatic because of the gear hunting. But if I was serious with wheeling, i would prefer an automatic.

Or regear your automatic with the 4.30 gears from the manual and be just as happy

Well, that's what I did. Got a great trade in allowance, but lost in taxes due to my state. But other than that couldn't be happier...just be realistic about what your financial situation is and if you can afford it, then why not?

The 6MT makes this truck fun to drive every day. If you’ll keep the truck for a long time, a few more dollars today will be well worth it.

so you trash the manual and say auto is the way, but yet you needed to spend more money to make the auto good, logic

I'll second that. While it's not the most precise gearbox in the world, I love my manual and it makes driving such a pleasure.

    What?o_O Don’t spread misinformation sir.

My MT has been flawless. I did remove the accumulator for a better clutch feel. But the accumulator is fine for normal driving. I could never rev match properly with that thing. My buddy has 19 sport with the accumulator and loves that truck.

Most new MTS come with accumulators, if not all. Easy fix though.

MT does not need OV tune to drive right, TSB will suffice. OV just really wakes up this 3.5L.

My truck drove very nice on a stock tune with the latest TSB.

Also, if you had issues on driving this MT, you need to work on your skills. This MT is buttery smooth, doesn’t take much to drive the truck nice and smooth.

Imo, your better off with a prius if driving at 85 mph than these tacoma's which are fine at 70 mph.

    Just curious .....

Has anyone with an auto trans ever considered installing a looser stall converter or even installing a performance valve body . Doing either of these greatly improves the performance of a transmission
