So I was looking for any adjustments on my cover. The pin that stick out inside the bed for the latch to catch on does not seem adjustable at all (pic 1). Perhaps inside the assembly the pin can be adjusted but that would seem to be excessive disassembly to make an adjustment here. However, when I removed the cover over the latch (pics 2 & 3) it revealed that the latch is attached with two nuts. It also appears that it may have a shim already installed or can have a shim added. Because there is a mechanical connection from the release handle to the latch mechanism, I would assume too much shim might create an angle that would cause the unlatching mechanism to bind or function incorrectly. So if any adjustment can be made, it appears the latch mechanism is where it would be. As I mentioned earlier, pushing down on the rear corners after the tailgate is closed produces an audible click which sucks up any gap I did have...so I am not inclined to attempt shimming this. But, I would be interested to know if anyone tries it.

The dealership actually tried removing those shims to help create a tighter seal but, it would not latch after that point. Toyota actually has an engineer schedule to come next week and look at several issues I have been having. This cover is one of those issues...I will keep you guys posted!

While working on a separate project, I noticed a lot of daylight at the front two corners of the tonneau cover. Not sure if anyone else has the same gap, but that is definitely a source for water ingress. There is nothing I can do about this gap except fill it with some silicone.

This guy got his from Extang but it is my understanding Toyota will have these available in the near future.

Thanks Scooter. Great post. So does this mean pieces are missing from the cover or is this a fix to an "oops" in the manufacturing?

There is a thread about this somewhere. I think Toyota just never thought anything about developing a fill for the gaps when they decided to put covers on the trucks..

I'm hoping they get them out before April because I'm planning on buying a tonneau cover for my truck.

I noticed in your pic that the package says, "Supplement to installation instructions" which means it is an oops.

Yeah from Extang which makes the Solid Fold 2.0 tonneau cover. Those part numbers I PM'ed you are Toyota parts numbers. Hope they get them out soon. I imagine you will get yours for nothing seeing how you have the factory cover.

To get the 2-stage latch to catch, I simply let the cover drop closed from a height of 6"-8". It's heavy enough that it latches hard. Since I started doing it that way, I haven't had any water leakage.

He looked at it and said that many others were also like this and that it was just a characteristic of the covers! That is such a BS answer on their part...they won't even commit to a fix at this point!

Sorry to hear that. I agree that is BS. So here is what i was thinking. You said the dealership removed the shim an the cover would not lock. The shim is really thick so that makes sense. Consider getting thin washers to replace the shim so that 3 or 4 washers equal the thickness of the shim...that will give you smaller adjustments. In the aviation industry, we have "peelable shims". It looks like a thick piece of metal but it is made up of many layers of metal. Each layer is approx .01" thick. This allows for micro adjustments. I really think peelable shims would be perfect for this. I assume one cand find these shims for sale...i have never looked though.

I agree...I will try to fix it myself now that Toyota won't.

Make sure the tie downs aren't located underneath the striker for the cover, inhibiting it to lock properly. That's what was wrong with mine. Once I relocated the tie downs it clicked into the secondary click no problem, no leaks now, and it's been raining hard here for what feels like weeks!

I need a new one of the retaining clip things for when you have it open.
forgot to put the clip on the snap part for when not in use on the passenger side and closed it, got caught between a bed cleat and the cover and now its broken.

Haven't even asked the dealer about it yet as the strap is riveted on so I'm almost thinking its not something that can easily be replaced.

Actually just went to look at it and noticed where its riveted has a bunch of screws in it so looks like it would be a replaceable part, but who knows what the dealer would charge me. After all I did this myself, not going to be like some that have posted on here how they broke something and expected the dealer to fix it for them under warranty.

    20170129_135522.jpg

It still actually holds but is a bit loose, I tried tugging on it to get it to come free, nothing would without pressing the side tabs, and from how little I'll ever drive with it open not sure its even worth it.
Just fitting the 4 factory tires in the bed with the cover on was a pain in the ass and had to keep it open, pretty much any time I have to move stuff I'll likely just remove it.

There is a little raised rectangle on the back of the cover on each side. If you put pressure directly on those you will get the second click.
