Has anyone put a map light into a 1st gen that didn't have one stock?

Mine doesn't have one, only a dome light, but I'm thinking of order a map light/rear view mirro pr combo and trying it ...

Yes you can put one in from a 4runner. There are a few different kinds but you want one that looks like this.

You just need to cut some holes in the headliner and run a wire from the dome light.

I actually just took that one out and put one in from a 00-02 4runner. It required much more work (trimming the plastic and mounting a nut to the roof).

If you're interested in my old one (the first picture), let me know. I will sell it to you will some super bright led bulbs (I had to get different ones for the other one).

If you get one from a 2nd gen 4Runner instead of a 3rd gen like pictured you have the ability turn the lights off when the door is open. There is a third button in the center of the unit. I have a 2nd gen unit collecting dust waiting to be installed in my regular cab. The dual lights will be nice. I will then take my regular cab unit and put it in my extended cab where there is no light up front, just towards the back on the headliner.

If you wire it to the dome light, will the on/off and door switch work, or is the map light only on when the dome light it on?

This one is my favorite. Low profile, three button. Do you know the part name or number?
