You guys are high if you think there will be a powertrain change in 2019, that's not how Toyota operates with ANY of their platforms, including the more competitive ones.

I think it's important to see what exactly they complained about. If it was the tranny problem that was fixed by the TSB then I wouldn't really put much stock on it. Car owners can be fickle people as demonstrated on this site :)

Also would like to know what model years. It seems to me that 2017s don't have nearly the same number of issues as 2016s, which is natural since 2016 was the first year of the redesign.

I do agree the third gens are far from perfect, but I would still buy them over the competition. Toyota customers generally have high expectations of reliability, so even if there are more reports overall I would still bet on my Tacoma over Chevy or GMC.

Exactly, when everyone other than Nissan bailed Toyota was able to just sit on their hands and rest on the past. I do hope they are working on quality issues and planning on some real upgrades or they will find themselves falling behind.

I do not think the multiple TSBs on that Auto Trans has ever corrected it, some guys seem OK dealing with it while others hate it.

I think that's a bit false. Just perusing through the threads there are many people that are satisfied with the update. You make it sound like the TSBs flat out didn't work, which let's be honest is blatantly false. It's all conjecture too. I'm the only one of my bay area software engineer board game loving friends that owns a Tacoma (and actually does outdoorsy things), so I can't survey other owners and see if they have problems. A lot of thread arguments on 3rd gen boils down to speculation and anecdotes. That being said I have no issues with the transmission on my Tacoma. It's not a sports car, but it gets going when I need it to get going. And I drive in the bay area. That tells you all you need to know about how much I value acceleration, especially in these absolutely stupidly short highway merges.

You can pull posts of people unsatisfied with the TSBs and I can do the same of the opposite. It really is pointless. My original point still stands, I will probably never buy Chevy or GMC over Toyota. It's not just historical data, but also the difference in philosophy on how they manufacture cars.

I'm relatively new to this site but it really is a funny place. 3rd gen is so polarizing. We have the defenders and we have the haters. And then we have lurkers like me who are happy with the truck they have.

I'm with you. If I were in the market for a mid size truck it would be a Tacoma...even with its current tarnished reputation.

Not you but, I must say, I find it interesting and odd people are willing to defend it OR maybe their expectations are lower???

I own a T4R at the moment and love it but, I sure can admit that certain aspects of it could be improved and that certain other products in the same broad category are better in some areas. But, it is a mid size body on frame...a major selling point for me (personal preference) and that offsets the negatives.

I'm a new owner, so I can't compare reputations across generations, but I feel a lot of it is just new gen growing pains. As I've stated above, I have no issue with the transmission in the busy Bay Area. Neither do I have an issue with the seats. Or the supposedly "primitive" technology options. Despite it's faults I, and many other silent others, believe the truck to be a good product. That's not to say that other people with issues aren't relevant, it's simply a broad statement across all owners.

And yes me haha, I would say I'm a defender. I just simply don't have an issue with a lot of the complaints here. The transmission is fine for me, I don't experience gear hunting. The ride is smoother than my 2014 forester. The technology seems fine.....honestly I could give less of a shit about onstar or 4g or whatever. It's a goddamn truck. It has navigation and bluetooth music. BAM, that's all I need. Can it get me to where I want to fish or camp reliably and better than the competition? The answer so far is a resounding yes. The only issue I have is it's a little overpriced and the gas mileage is disappointing, but the pros outweigh those cons by a large margin.

I forgot to add, arguments over competition are different than arguments of "can it be better". I absolutely agree it can be better. But that doesn't change the fact that I love it. The two statements are not mutually exclusive, which is what lot of people on this site fail to grasp. Also, anyone who wants to argue "value" based on base msrp between competition needs to be slapped. Go price a Colorado or Canyon to a TRD sport or off-road and then talk to me about "value". They're just as expensive if not more. I should know, I was just recently on the market doing research between brands.

    "First year problems"

I remember a time when Toyota (and Honda) could roll out a new product and it was at the top of the chart for reliability. I do believe Toyota will get it together (if they haven't already for MY17). I think there's a lot at play with the ratings. Everything from the publics expectation combined with Toyota reputation to new consumer demands for technology to government regulations for safety, emissions and MPG and better competition...vehicles are just way more complex than they used to be. Honda is the biggest disappointment with a lot of mediocre and or below average products now...just didn't used to be the case.

Nailed it. I 100% agree that even with its flaws I really like my T4R and if I needed a mid-size Tacoma would be it.

Looking back at historic sales figures, Toyota has a very good chance of getting knocked off that pillar once the new Ranger comes out.

Not that I like Fords, but that's what the historic #'s show.

Yep. The 4Runner is the only true body on frame mid size SUV on the market. GM and Ford sells full size body on frame SUVs built on a truck platform but they are very expensive ($50-70k equipped with decent options. Ouch!)

this is the reason why I bought a Tacoma over a gm product because of its simplicity. Toyota doesn't go overboard with technology and onstar and 4G wifi in a truck is pointless features for me. If I am driving why do I need wifi that is just going to distract me.

The Tacoma is a bit overpriced for what you get and Toyota doesn't offer any incentives to help on the price; therefore, dealerships are stingy with discounting these trucks. I test drove a Colorado z71 4x4 and I liked the truck but the bottom plastic fender and how it looks like a crossover with a bed was a deal breaker for me.
The chevy dealership offered it to me for $31,875 with no haggling necessary and I still bailed out. I paid $34,830 for my TRD off road so that shows you how much I loved the Tacoma more.

^ This. It took 11 years between 2nd and 3rd gen and the 3rd gen wasn't much of an update.....

Its just how they operate as a company. Expecting a change all of a sudden 3 years in because the Ford Ranger is coming is silly. Even in other more saturated and competitive markets like crossovers and mid-size cars they don't do 3 year life cycles/powertrain updates, bad for resale, bad for reliability, higher production/development cost thus less profit, etc.

    *Until the Ranger returns

Also, sales are definitely going to dip if rates rise again. I don't see that happening in the near term. Too much uncertainty so I doubt the fed will up them again.

Its funny how much these vehicles seem less affordable when you can't spread it out over 84 months at 3% interest.

The Fed just jacked it up a Quarter point last Month and if not mistaken said she was going to hike it two more times this year.

    I agree that I don't see 4th gen coming anytime soon. Gen 1 debut in 1996, and Gen 2 lasted 10 years, Gen 3 hit's in 2016....

I don't know about lack of an update thoug, different motor, transmission, looks updated and the interior (dash and tech) overhauled to a reasonable extent. I think that was a fairly significant update. It still has some old school quality/feel to it that seems to be what reviews are hitting on, like static seat position and more rigid drivability and road feel.

It is frustrating to see reviews hit on reliability on a 1 year old truck.

She did, but I think she'll wait for the next hikes. (That's what the people that know what they are talking about said on Bloomberg business this morning while I was getting ready for work)

Trust me, it's more frustrating to deal with reliability issues on a truck that's less than a year old.

I bought the truck for it's reliability and resale. I've been in the shop so much due to the former that I might get to test out the latter very soon.

I want this truck to get fixed. It's so close to being perfect for me. Wish it would stop howling.
