There's a way to put the transmission in warm up mode without the techstream, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. But it couldn't hurt to take it in and complain about the shift delay. It very well could be low. I've seen 4runners come from the factory low on fluid.

Dude's not using the housing cap as intended. There's a drain plug in the middle of the cap that you unscrew and snap in a plastic spigot (disposable one that comes with the filter). This drains the housing. No more of a mess than holding a bottle under the drain nipple on the 2nd gen V6, and certainly an improvement over the filters on the 2TR and 5VZ.

That very scenario happened to a member here. He didn't get a new engine.

That's the first time I've seen anything like that! That's pretty neat how that works!

well at this moment, there aren't new engines to be had. An acquaintance of mine at a different dealership was tearing apart a 10k mile 2GRKFS oil burner. There was a 5+ week wait time for a long block. Fuckin nuts.

I saw someone leave a drain plug loose on a 4 cylinder Camry, that man got a new engine...

^That's silly. Even the Jiffy Lube guys install a gasket-type drain plug if they strip out the old one...

Nothing was stripped out, they just finger tightened the drain plug and forgot to put a wrench on it.

My sister took her Mercedes in to jiffy lube, they put in the wrong oil filter in it. It made it all the way to the house before it stopped (oil starvation). They sent it into a shop that replaced the bearings. Wasn't too soon after that they got rid of it. I've also heard of the old oil filter gasket left stuck on the engine block. So now when the engine is under load, with more oil pressure. The oil pressure actually blows the gasket out, spewing oil all over the engine and road.

When I was a kid with his first car, a man that owned a full service station, shared with me why you dip your finger in oil and apply oil to the filter gasket and the part of the engine where the filter meets the block. He said, "Son, every time you change the oil, lube the block and the gasket, for two reasons. When you lube the gasket, you get a more consistent contact with the block. When you lube the block, you will feel whether or not part of the gasket from the old filter has been left stuck to the block, and will cause a catastrophic oil leak". He's been long dead now, but I still remember him when I change my oil. He may not have known much, but what he knew, he knew damn well.

I've always have looked at the old filter to make sure that old rubber gasket is off along with it. Then I apply oil to the new rubber ring and also pour about 8 ounces of oil in the new filter. So when you start the engine for the first time the filter isn't bone dry.

So,billybob50, seems as though I read or heard that the Toyota brand oil filters have a valve that prevents oil from leaking from the filter, back into the engine, when the engine is shut down. I realize we were discussing the unused filter, post oil change and prior to first engine start, post oil change. Any truth to the valve thing? If I'm making any sense, clarify for a brotha.

It makes sense on motors that the filter is upright, to keep oil from draining back into he pan. Also that valve is there in case the filter gets clogged. Bypasses the clogged filter material and keeps circulating through the motor. Not sure where you're going with this? I do like to saturate a new oil filter with clean motor oil. One to two less seconds of no oil pressure, when you start up the motor after an oil/filter change!

I agree with you. I'm just engaging in a little self education by resourcing sources.

Had a guy on the Subaru site, the Crosstrek. The filter is located up on top of the engine, upside down he wanted every last drop of dirty oil out as much as possible. So he removed the oil filter that day and let the oil drain out through the night. Next morning he installed the filter and filled the motor with oil. When he went to start it, the oil pressure wouldn't come up! What had happened all the oil from the filter down to the pump was dry! The oil pump needed to be primed! So he took off the oil filter and poured oil down the intake of the engine oil filter port. He was successful in priming the oil pump and getting the oil pressure back up. Stories like this makes me want to buy the vehicle when it comes right out of the factory door!

I made a post here a few years back on my new 2010 tacoma i took in for its first oil change at 3k. tech drained the oil and "forgot'' to put oil back in it! Long story short , it took a lot of time and effort for anything to be done about it.. F#%$ the dealer!

It isn't really the dealer, it's the low wage people they hire to do the work.

Thats pretty talented. So he finished the oil change, forgot to put oil in, pulled it out of the shop, potentially even ran it through a car wash, then delivered it back up front and it wasn't ticking or knocking or anything?

When I do oil changes, I remove the oil cap and leave the cap on the hood latch so if I get distracted and forget to put oil in it, I won't be able to latch the hood.
