Why not diagnose it by pulling the drive shaft and driving in 4wd very gently? That'll tell you if it's the diff or the drive shaft. Could save you a bunch of money also

Fear of the unknown stops me on that one.

Done that in a domestic truck before. Don't know why I can't make myself do it with this one

Honestly with a howl, i'd think carrier bearings, pinion bearing, both. Drive shaft is not the first thing I think of. Could even be axle shaft bearings, hanger bearing. I don't think it's u joints though.

    Wheel bearings feel fine.

I know I bought a junk carrier bearing. So its likely the cause of the noise. But I also don't trust the moog ujoints because the place I took it to said they were a bitch to install. So I no longer trust this drive shaft.

Plus, I have to get to at least 20-30mph to hear the howl. I'm not really willing to try that in my neighborhood with just the front diff driving the truck...

Also, this being the second time i've had a pinion seal completely fail (once before the suspension, wheels and tires) I just don't understand. I mean a pinion seal isn't that bad to do but i sure as fuck don't want to be doing them every 10-15k if this trend continues

I agree, pinion seal should last a very long time. If you know you bought a junk carrier bearing, maybe start with that? U joints can be a bitch on n old truck, I've spent days removing caps out of front axle shafts on Jeeps. Rust and time make every job extra fun lol

Why not drill it out slightly and tap it for an M10x1.25 or 1.5?

normally i would have, but the bolt is actually a caliper slide pin, the pins bolt directly to the steering knuckle on the Focus, and the previous owner had already put a helicoil in the hole, but it pulled out on me so i had to replace it.

:)Previous owner of that 4runner I sold Mob dropped me off some extra keys to it this morning. After Mob installs the new suspension lift, wheels & tires, sliders and custom bumpers I'm gonna have a silent auction for the keys along with his address. PM me if your interested lol.
