Thanks for the info. When was the last time you were in that area? He lives about two blocks North of North Ave, parallel to I-83. West of I-83 between Druid Lake and North Ave. He has lived there for about three years and regularly walks his dog. He is cautious. UT has never had a problem. The projects on North Ave, North of Mica Campus were knocked down a couple years ago. There are plans for retail to be built in their place.

We've been away from that area for only a year and a half. Sounds like he is doing well up there. I don't want to jinx it. Just tell him to never let his guard down. I don't know him personally or you for that matter other than what I know on the forum here but that is enough for me to know you're decent so I can only assume he is just like his Dad. Again, I may sound tainted but that's because I have experienced a lot of bad in the city. Definitely more bad than good.

Typically though, unless a pack of pit bulls get out of a yard he should be ok walking his dog. (this doesn't happen every day but it did just happen the other day. The woman will live, although severely scared for life, her dog did not survive)

All I am saying is, Baltimore is now considered more dangerous than Detroit, and is #21 on the list of the most dangerous places to live in the world. I love Maryland and wish Baltimore was nicer. I would not have moved to the country. I knew if I didn't though I would wind up in prison. I like where I am though and that if I forget to lock my truck, or forget to remove something from the inside or forget to lock my house or leave my pressure washer out I don't have to worry about it. In the city they will steal your trash cans. They will break into your vehicle, and yes, they will kill you for a cell phone.

I hate that I have to walk a block to the parking garage. My wife works a block away and used to meet me out front of my building. That was up until the roving gangs of youths were terrorizing innocent citizens mugging/beating them. Now I get the vehicle, and drive around the block to pick her up. It's a fucking shame. If we could both earn the same amount of money we do working in the city somewhere else, we would switch in a heart beat.

My family has lived in Baltimore City since the late 1800's. My grandfather bought his first house on Rose Street near Upper Fells Point for $1,500.00 back in 1921. Things are not the same as they used to be just 20 years ago.

But your son must be happy, and must be safe. That's great. I hope he stays there. It's people like him that will eventually change the city.

What's a shame is that no area in and around Baltimore, including the suburbs, is safe anymore. Between Federal Court decisions and local policies to allow the riffraff of Baltimore to move anywhere they want at taxpayer expense in the name of desegregation, brings the problems everywhere.

You're absolutely right. That's why when people ask about areas I always suggest "anywhere away from public transportation". Just look at areas like Owings Mills. Before the light rail ran up there it was swanky. High end homes and high profit jobs. There are a lot of places like this. If you think the real reason the Red Line Project was defeated was because of noise and congestion you're mistaken. Why the feds investigated it and were trying to get a civil rights law suit together.

Of course Section 8 and Government Funded housing is always bad. For the most part, the residents of this type of housing have mostly given up and are just looking for a free ride. They've lost respect in themselves and therefore will not have any respect for me or my property. I do know for a fact a lot of people that are fortunate to have this type of housing to turn to when there is no other option would gladly like to see their neighborhoods safer and crime free. I have seen this first hand, in Cherry Hill, which is one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. There are decent people everywhere you look, you just have to look harder in some areas.

The crime in my area consists mainly of domestic abuse, marijuana, common assaults and B&E's/thefts. What is alarming is, since a lot of homes out there in the country are occupied during the day by the non-working spouse they can turn violent quick. What would typically be a burglary, turns into a beating or worse. And no, we are not completely safe from crime either but the statistics will show that we are almost 20 times less likely to be victims than someone that lives in Baltimore City. Still not crime free though. And yes, there are some areas in Harford County that are really bad. There are areas where the poverty is higher, and in higher concentrations and those areas are just as you say, replanted city folk. Edgewood is always in the news. Joppatown too. My nephew lives in Joppatown and there are good pockets and bad pockets. With that said, our house is protected by a cellular alarm (no wires to cut), which is monitored, and we also have security cameras with motion detectors that we can monitor from our phones. Then of course there is protection from a home invasion at night. I have learned to rely on no one.

Typically though, people still hold the door for you when you walk into a store behind them and will offer a pleasant greeting. It's still the country to some extent.

Me, I'm nice to everyone and never look down my nose to anyone. It does piss me off though to see people wanting a free ride because they feel they are owed it. The wife and I were poor as shit when we first got together. Like food stamp poor when I was laid off. I only rode that train though as long as it took to find another job, and it was money I had paid into the system. It took a long tome to recover from that though. Why I never disrespect anyone doing any job. I have been there.

The next place we live will be a gated adult community. Mainly because I'm getting tired of the chores and not enough free time to do the things we want. But also for the added security they offer.

But I'll say it again, it's a damn shame there will always be scum bag criminals that feed off decent folk. Why I support any effort to rid society of them.

Sorry for the rant. I just feel strongly about anyone being bullied in any way shape or form.

Hey, like I said Jerry, if he has been there this long than he is definitely smarter than the average bear. Crime comes to decent people, not the other way around. If he has avoided it this long he may just be able to make it forever. I really hope he does. It's definitely a great learning experience. I have been surrounded by diversity my whole life. My grandfather was a city worker, and we always had people of various ethnicity in our house. My dad was marine so we had it there too. When we moved back to the states in 72' segregation and busing was in full swing. I was so confused as a 12 year old. I just didn't understand any of it. As I got older I never let that part of my life dictate who I should call a friend. I feel like a better person for it.

Crime however is not a specific color. Crime comes in every color. I would however buy him some bear attack mace that he can attach to the dog leash. That way if he or the dog is ever attacked by other dogs he will have a better chance.
