My 2nd gen exhibited the same thing. Whining, howling noise at certain speeds. Didn't have any play in either axle, but wound up being the left rear wheel bearing. The only real telltale sign was oil seeping out of the drum when I swapped wheels/tires. Like you the noise kept getting worse and worse. If you have never done rear wheel bearings at 109K you're in the range they seem to fail. The passenger side in my old truck was replaced in the 80K mile range and the drivers side was around 140K.

Its so weird how some people get 100k out of them and some others get 300k out of them.

    I appreciate the confirmation

I'm half tempted to pull the half shaft and try to 'feel' the bearing itself by hand and see if I can physically feel it. I just want hard evidence lol. But, I did just replace my rear brakes about 10k miles ago so I do not want to have to redo them again. Maybe I got lucky in finding this early.

The shittiest part is, I was going to put my 4runner up for sale this week and now I feel like i should postpone it another week or two until I know that I have the truck sorted

MD, looking for advice and tools for ECGS bushing.

I have about about 2” lift on my truck and have noticed a rumble strip feeling between 15-20 MPH. My diver side CV axle has a good amount of play, significantly more than the passenger side. I’m thinking ECGS bushing. I can’t say there’s too much of a change between 4WD and 2WD, but I still feel like it’s the culprit.

I’ve seen a few posts and a video that you can do it without removing the axle nut, and I think that’s what I’m going to try to do. Has anyone done this?

And also, is it worth getting the extra tool for driving in the bushing and axle seal? If anyone has them, id love to buy them off of you.

I did mine without taking the axle nut off but it is probably not much easier. You don’t have a lot of extra room to maneuver. At least that what I felt like. Don’t get me wrong, it is doable. I don’t have the tools but @RobP62 has the puller but he’s not been active much here lately.
I used a pvc fitting to hammer the bushing in.
Are you going to change the fluid while your at it?

thanks for that. What’s size pvc coupling did you use for the bushing and did you replace your axle seal too?

My current torque wrench only goes up to 150, so I was trying to avoid buying or renting one and also getting a socket to fit the axle nut.

and yup, unfortunately I changed the fluid in October, but I’ll probably drain again and dump in that 140 Lucas oil that ecgs recommends.

Sounds about right about just changing your oil and then doing this type of work. That makes sense about the torque wrench. I’m not sure if autozone rents tq wrenches at no cost but I know other tools are deposit and you get that back.. I think.
I’m not sure what size coupling I used, maybe 1.5” I’ll see if I can find it.
Here are some threads you might be able to barrow the tools from someone-

I don't. I just know it's the source of my kazoo noise.

I don't know if your generation truck has the same door seal issues as the 2nd Gens, but my truck has an obnoxious "Kazoo" noise when there's a strong cross wind. Toyota had a TSB for replacement seals, my truck missed the window to get them covered by Toyota. my point is- maybe it's your door seals and not the windshield?

It's the windshield. It stops immediately every time I clean the windshield and it gets wet. I discovered it on my way back from Westminster a week ago. :D

Gotchya! Well I’ll go ahead and reach out on some threads and see if I can find anyone to lend the tools. Thanks for linking those! I don’t have a ton of experience wrenching other than typical maintenance tasks, but the job looks pretty straight forward if I take my time. Thanks!

sheesh, slow down with my internet activities for a week or two and there's 20+ pages to catch up on... hope all is well, it's going to take me a bit to scroll back and read...

I got my taco from PA so it had never had the front plate mounted. In effort to avoid drilling my bumper I bought one of those no drill front licence plate brackets from the guy that sells them on here a few weeks ago . It's a very nicely made kit he sends, I tried installing it yesterday and promptly snapped one of the bumper cover mounting bolts that it mounts to (no fault of the bracket, it snapped during the re-install, before it was tightened down all the way it bound up). i need to try to cut/drill it out, not looking forward to it but it shouldn't be too bad. had a very strong urge to just re-install the one and drill the bumper but i'm going to try to get it out, anyone have a parts source where i can get a single bolt like this? or know what a rought equivalent is from the hardware store?

There is Hap Bakers up here in Carroll Co. They have a pistol range as well as a rifle range. It’s open to the public, but I think there is a small tax for non-county shooters. It’s off 140, directly behind the landfill. We go there every once in a while, not a bad place.
