lol well I certainly failed.

 

Fab up some brackets and mount them. Unless you put that shell on your bed… then they probably won’t do a whole lot.

 

I can’t offer much help or advice but I’d suggest draining and filling the xfer case and diff just to start. Maybe it’s low fluid in the front.

 

Drain fluid first and put attention for small metal coming out. Diff and tcase

Oh, the fun is just beginning for you if you start wrenching on a VW. I'm not sure if the triple square bolts existed in the air cooled 'dubs, but I got acquainted with them on the MKI cars and all the way into the early MK V's ( when I called it quits on VW's) Way too many quirky "specialty" tools and home fabbed tools to mimic the shop tools called out in the Bentley manuals.

If you need some triple squares, my advice is to buy a good quality set from a tool truck. The cheapie ones that you can get from Lisle or the autozone level stuff will just leave you disappointed and with stripped out hardware.

they are definitely bed bars. They look like model that one of the fabricators made as a low-profile mounted to a t-slot so they could be mounted under a tonneau. I forget who made them but I looked at them briefly years ago, don’t think they ever took off,

 

There are a few Amish families that live in the Hampstead.-Mamchester area. Hitching posts were just installed at the Hampstead Walmart for them.

Whatever you fancy… I have a couple bike racks on mine as well as a hi-lift jack and traction boards. You can really mount whatever you’d like.

What’s the length of these? The more I look, they almost remind me of an accessory rail for bed bars… something that would run front to back rather than side to side. I say that because of the mounting tabs on the ends. Kind of like these, just slimmer…

 

What Tony said… when you did the ECGS bushing and removed the factory needle bearings, did you inspect them to make sure you had all the rollers from the bearing race? I’ve heard horror stories of people loosing a bearing in the case and not knowing it! Maybe run a magnet around in the catch pan… see how much metal is in it. Hopefully none and it’s just low, but better to be safe.
