That’s so awesome!! Love seeing the next generation outside and enjoying nature!! Most kids these days and parents are so glued to electronics and their phones, it’s disgusting. It amazes us how many times we will go out to dinner and see families in restaurants not talking or even looking at one another, just starting into their phones.

    Like the old saying says…
Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he will never starve.

If I ever have kids, they are not getting a cellular device until they are a teenager.

At least that’s what I tell myself now, never having dealt with a crying child of my own

Oh for sure. My kids (twins) are 11 and just got phones this past year. But the only reason is because they like to go off outside to the orchard and ponds to fish and play in the woods. they will disappear for hours without coming home. And I love that. But we needed to be able to reach them, and vise versa, if something were to happen. But we have their phones locked up. We can see every swipe, text and call they do. We can see their GPS at all times. And they have zero internet access, nor can they download any apps with out us doing it for them via parental password controls.

And I’m not dismissing electronics and devices in any way… I know they are great for passing time, especially on long trips and such. And kids learning technology early gives them a great head start on the future. But the way people are no longer able to separate themselves from their devices, and the lack of socialization skills between people these days is horrifying. There are too many beautiful things in this world right out side our doors (at least for most) that people are missing out on… because they rather be in a virtual world of make believe.

This was very well written. I deleted all my social media stuff a long time ago because I feel the same way as you. TW is the only “social media” I have and it definitely helps me get outdoors and connect with other like minded outdoorsy truck people.

Right on at first I thought I got ambushed but all good. I hear you though. I hate to see destructive things happening to the planet that I just want to explore.

It was pretty sad when I was in Montana last month and woke up one morning and all the mountains had disappeared because of the smoke from the wildfires. We were only about 2 hours from the Canadian border so it was even worse than it’s been here.

Sounds like you are the dictator dad ruining your children’s lives

Or at least that’s what 11 year old me would have said. I CAN HANDLE A CELL PHONE. And well, I could. But that was back when we picked up calls from random numbers and texted via QWERTY (and paid per text).

Agreed with all of that. Technology is an aid, should not be running our children’s lives.

It's crazy isn't it! We balance our kids screen time pretty good. They never get a device at a dinner table or when we are out. Pretty much use them for education and long road trips allow them to watch A movie.

It's a tough balance of control and allowing them to interact with their friends. It's a balance of allowing them to fit in at school and all of our beliefs. We don't want to squeeze too hard and push them away and resent us and what we want them to like.

It's a major challenge as a parent for sure! We got hit hard last school year when my 7 year old got a school iPad and a week later he had Minecraft on it. Certainly a challenge, but totally with you on it all. We work hard to balance tech with the values you mentioned. It's hard and many people just give in. It makes for some hard conversations with our kids on why they can't do something their friends are doing...especially when I want to say "well their parents are idiots"

I wish I could but owning a business it's part of the gig. Unfortunately it's how the world connects even if I don't like it. I put up with it so I can earn my living to go explore the outdoors and world.

It does suck. Fires are part of the circle of life of a forest. Just an unfortunate part.

Agreed. Same, though I was on reddit for like 10 years. That said, after they started charging out the ass for API and ran the third-party apps off, I don't use it much anymore. I do have a Facebook, with no friends or photos or content, to be able to use the marketplace.

Lol no worries bud, I don't do ambushes. If we gon' fight,

When I was a kid, my parents tried to do this with video games, to limit our play time of Super Nintendo, N64, etc. We ended up having to do shores to earn video game time in 15-minute increments. It would work well as a system for a month or so until my mom got tired of tracking and updating it, so we would do our thing until she reimplemented it a few months later

Very true. Unfortunately, the ultra dry weather and lack of rain most places have experienced for the last few years allows bigger trees to burn, and to burn hotter, so the fires do more than refresh and control the brush, or that's what I've learned from friends in the environmental field and my brother, who was a wildland firefighter for a few years.

With out a doubt. I deleted all my Social Media as well maybe 10+ years ago… TW is the only thing I have as well to this day. And life has never been simpler!!

I've made too much money buying & selling in FB groups to leave FB. For instance I bought this 1975 Kawasaki Z1900 that was sitting in a Edinburg Va shed since the 80's for $800 bucks off of a member on a motorcycle FB group. I cleaned it up, got it running off of starting fluid & a jumpbox and sold it on ebay for $7700. I collector in Oklahoma bought it.

Oh, I definitely agree… and if I was in a business or a situation where I was flipping things, social media is a must. But for my lifestyle, it’s just more headaches and drama than anything positive.

Side note… that’s one beautiful bike! Would love a before and after shot. I’d love an old 4cyl Jap bike like that to convert into a cafè racer!

Pic from the day the shipper came to pick it up. I removed the 1970's accessories but I included them in the ebay auction. I still have these 2 left, a 76 kz900 & a 78 kz1000 sitting in my brother's garage back in Baltimore. I use to be big into the old 900 Kaws.

I'm hungry. It's been too long since I've been on a bike. Two hit and runs aren't going to stop me from roding again... though my next ride will have tourniquets in my gear...

Living away from my childhood home makes getting rid of it a bit harder. I just went through my FB on day and everyone that was negative, always political, or I just didn't care about and got rid of them from my feed. Now I can simply catch up on the people I do care about quickly without all the crap.
