Good morning, all!

Anyone care to offer mower advice?

I'm looking at something soon, as the grass is starting to grow a bit...

Zero turn - pretty good stuff; had one for my 10 acres in Michigan (mowed about 1/3rd of it, plus trails). Very flat property - 300 x about 1/4 mile long. For this house the property is sloped a bit, and I'll have debris to negotiate as I move from one mowing area to the next, and a zero turn may not have the traction I need until I get the yard cleared. Out in the open it's fast of course. Possibly weird on hillsides as it's engine hangs over behind the drive wheels. Gonna spend probably $2500 used, or 3500 new.

Lawn Tractor - possibly better at towing little trailers around the yard, and my trash cans the 495 feet of driveway down to the mailboxes on the main road. Probably better to get over obstacles (tree and limb debris). Possibly better at inclines - as could be more balanced (front engine, rwd). Would spend $1500 used and maybe 2500 new.

Any input?

 

I absolutely love my Kubota Z421. It’s a gas powered 24hp Kawasaki motor. I have a decent slope on the side of our 1 acre property… I just take it a bit slower when it’s wet or has that early morning dew. Not sure the prices on them used though… guess that all depends on hours and condition. New they are salty, but that’s what financing is for. Bought mine at Westminster Kubota when they had 0%, and traded in my Snapper (Forest Gump) rear engine rider. Stay away from the fake Deere’s at home improvement stores… if you want a Deere, go to an actual dealer like Finches.

 

How are the box stores Deere's not real deere?

 

Oh - and even used we're looking at $5k for that kubota. Out of my budget. I don't have the kinda scratch you third-gen tacoma owners have.

When I was looking at mowers, it was a toss up between the Kubota and Deere. My neighbors uncle is a lead tech for Finches service center, and was talking to him about the two. He told me that the “box store” Deeres are technically Deeres because they bear the name… but that’s where it ends. From what I was told, they are made in different plants all together. With less desirable components, thinner lower grade cheaper metals, and less powerful motors. That’s why they are able to sell you a mower with green paint for so cheap. A lot of companies all over do this type of outsourcing.

As per the pricing… I can’t speak to having money lol. I traded a mower ($400 at most) for my down payment and 100% financed the rest. It wasn’t bad though, maybe $150ish a month. That’s the only reason I was able to buy a new one.

 

When I'm drowning in debt, what's another bucket full eh?
