No expert but I might know a thing or two.

If the coil and your copper lines are iced/frozen, you need Freon.


What’s going on with it?

I was thinking the same as Eric, first thought is condensation line or the coils are frozen. Does it have power? Is it trying to kick on? Possibly the fan motor locked up? Are the coil fins all clogged up with grass clippings (I did this to mine)? Maybe the capacitors simply needs replaced? Hell, it could be the thermostat inside that took a crap… making you think it’s the outside unit.

Sorry, I guess it’s easy to run down a list of possibilities… but without being able to see it/test it, we are simply fishing in a puddle.

 

we keep it set @78, noticed it was 80 on the t-stat, lowered it to 74 nuthin, then, the inside fan quit, yet the outdoor unit kept running. the t-stat kept displaying cool on, then off, then on, etc yet it never came on. pulled the t-stat and wired all 3 together, everything came on, yet still 81 82, went down stairs saw moisture I can only assume from the coil. shut unit off, opened the inside unit up, fan and towel dryed it for several hours, than ran it without the outside unit coming on for 2, no more moisture. hooked it all back up, fired it up after about an hour, warm copper pipe to outside unit..........................

 

Hmm, sounds like it could be low Freon but still tough to determine.

When you lowered the tstat did you hear a relay click. Though yours may or may not have an audible click.

How’s the filter look? If you swapped it with a high/more restrictive filter, it might be too restrictive for your unit.

As @Taco1004 said, the outdoor unit could need a good cleaning too.

I know some dudes who eeked out like 5 mpg on an F350 towing stuff. Go for it, you won’t.
