I'm pretty booked through September with the wedding and honeymoon, but I'd definitely like to hang out and see what you guys have going on. reminisce back to when I had time to fabricate on the side :(

regarding tube rears, I'm not sure what CAD software you're using, but if you're using one that allows you to model with specified materials and material specs (density in particular, it'll quickly show you that to build a bombproof rear tube bumper, it won't weigh very much less, if any, than a plate rear. what you get from it is versatility. I'm sure you're well aware of tube's advantages from strength and recovery standpoints, but I'd be happy to go over them with you, and how to maximize the usefulness of a tube bumper specifically on a 2nd gen.

excited to see what you guys come up with for your initial design

Hey my neighbor just got his 2003 sport edition 4runner lifted and now his ABS light is on. A shop did the lift, any idea what's going on? I know it's vague sorry.

Brake lines are at an awkward angle because extended ones are probably needed. Just guessing.

We use bendtech right now. We have the base version which is "ok" but might be upgrading to the "pro" version. It is a lot more intuitive. And as far as CAD modeling, we use SolidWorks. So it is very easy to change around materials, thicknesses, run FEA on our designs, etc.

awesome. if you want to make weight savings with a tube rear, solidworks will be your best friend. biggest areas you'll see savings are:
-thinner recovery points with weld washers to maintain full pull out strength at the eye.
-same theory for the frame mounts and bolt holes. may have to plate the areas where tubes meet the frame plate.
-larger bend radii. goes further with less LF of tube.
-use smaller diameter tube in members that will only ever see tension and compression, like the internal bracing, or braces for the wings, should it be a high clearance.
-use gussets with cut-outs. ruff-stuff and ballistic fab are both great sources for those if you don't have a cnc table.

the little details are what will shed 2 lbs here and there, and add up across the bumper. it creates a more labor intensive build, but is worth it in the end if you do it properly.

Good deal. Thanks man. We "had" access to the CNC high def plasma table for the sheet metal shop I run but that is no longer an option so we are looking into building our own. We have a good relationship with a few local laser houses but they don't work well with prototypes, just our volume orders.

When they first put it in they adjusted it and had it at like 5 in of lift and stretched the brake lines. I think that might of been the cause.

have you searched for "makerspace" or "hackerspace" in your area? being close to Baltimore, I would think there would be a couple near you. great little membership style open shops. some tend to be more programming/3d printing, etc oriented, but the bigger ones tend to have some serious industrial shop equipment. may get lucky and find one with a cnc table. at $50-$100 per month membership, that could be invaluable

I have. We did find a place in Harbor East with a 36" x 48" CNC table that'll handle up to 1/4" thick mild steel which would work for us. Only crummy part is bringing the sheet stock in that size. We buy it in 48" x 96" sheets and if we have to get it cut from our plate vendor it becomes pricey. We can build a 48" x 96" table for around $10-$12k and that is our goal. But we just aren't there yet with capital and orders.

few people respect CBIs engineering enough to understand the pricetag. how many of them do you really see running around? it's a shame.
