Did she give you a shipping quote?

When I ordered my bumper ten weeks ago, she quoted me 265 for a freight company I have not heard of.. but, when it was finished she is now using fedex and it went up to 339 and that's for business shipping as it's cheaper than residential.

We struggle with the same issues although I lost my ass on the first set of sliders shipped, then learned what I did wrong. Shipping is just an evil that can't be avoided. It averages $100 more when they deliver to a residence over a business.

I'm not sure how he does it, but Adam from 4x-innovations ships DOM sliders for $300. Shipping is obviously not 1/3 of the price, so he's got something figured out.

When I ordered from Bruteforce, he shipped from California for 150$ and that was the most expensive from one coat to the other.. also he told me if I ordered sliders as well our what ever, it wouldn't cost any more as it would all for on the same pallet.. that was through fastenall third party shipping.

She quoted me like $300 to my house and $160 to my buddies shop that I'm having it sent to. I'll be pissed if it comes out to $399 haha

So here is how logistics works with trucking companies. I only know because I deal with it all day at my 9-5 job and my wife is the logistics manager who schedules trucks in.

Your rates are based on how many trucks you call in per month. Then, the rates are based off of PCF density when using LTL which is trucks that go through various HUBs and unload/reload your product multiple times to get it to its destination.

So in my situation, I am shipping truck once, maybe twice a month which means rates will always be high. On top of that, if the truck has to pick up and/or drop off to a residence it is extra. If they have to call before hand, it is extra. If there is no loading dock for pick up, extra. If they need to have a lift gate, extra... My rates seem to average between $300-$400 per shipment of sliders anywhere in the US. They're not a large, heavy item in the LTL world so they're pretty much a minimum charge no matter what which is right around $300, plus $100 if it is going to a house and needs a lift gate.

I try to use Fastenal when I can. Their rates range between $150 and $225 anywhere in the US but with them you have to go to their location to get them, I have to take them there for drop off and there is no guaranteed delivery date or tracking really. So as long as you're not in a huge rush to get them and there is a location close to you then it is a good deal. I just shipped a set to TX through Fastenal, took almost 3 weeks. Standard LTL truck would have been 3 days.

This is why small fabricators like group buys, it saves tons of money on shipping to the customer. I can ship 5 sets of sliders for the same price that I can ship 1 set...

we used to have a pretty good TW express going on in texas. Houston, Dallas, Austin, Corpus, etc. pretty much anywhere within a 4 hour radius of Houston, there was someone going every weekend. had what was essentially a constant flow of traded and bought parts going all over south/east texas every weekend. worked great. if there was more forum involvement, it wouldn't be hard to get a similar setup in the DC metro area. maybe even into southern VA and western MD.
