best option for a tire gate with a stock Tacoma bumper is to lose the tailgate. the factory bumper isn't rigid enough to support a swing gate on its own. if you wanted one that didn't require removing the tailgate, you'd have to make a bumper subframe to mount to, or just cut a couple holes/notches in the bumper and mount it to the frame/hitch.

remove the tailgate option.

 

Can you make the actual tailgate swing with a tire mounted?

 

the one in the picture? yes. that's why it has pins on the left side instead of bolts. just pull the pins and it'll swing right out.

 

then no, the actual tailgate cannot support a tire on its own.

Well, we haven't tested it to failure since I can't exactly afford to just buy a tailgate so I can break it haha. But, we have sold a ton of them to people who load quads and motorcycles in and out and have not had any issues. Pretty sure you don't weigh as much as them haha. When I had my truck, I had close to 800 lbs of tubing right in the center of the tailgate and didn't do anything to it.

Sliders for a guy from VA. I don't have new truck money haha. Married in August, closed on our first house 2 days later, baby due next spring. I am searching high and low for a high mileage first gen access cab 4x4. Suggestions? Other than CL.

 

Is the weak tailgate a 2nd gen issue? I'm a big guy and i've sat and even standed on the tailgate on my 1st gen and it felt strong to me.
