History: I have a 2007 Tacoma double cab trd off road with just under 300k miles on the clock that I bought from my mom about 4 years ago that that she and my dad bought brand new off the lot. We’ve never had an issue with it out side of normal maintenance since they bought it. I bought it as I felt it was a little safer to drive the new kiddo that was on the way and sold my 3.4 swapped 95 runner. We’ve since retired my wife’s little commuter car as it was on its last leg and the Tacoma is now her daily.

problem: a couple weeks ago it started dumping coolant out of the access cut outs on the bottom of the bell housing of the transmission where it meets the engine block. After a lot of research through forums I felt pretty strongly about it being the rear soft plug that resides behind the starter ring as there was no evidence of coolant leaking down the sides of the bell housing/engine block coming from the coolant piping nor “strong evidence “ of a leak from the bypass piping from what I was able to see. It was purely pouring out of those two cut outs as described above. Again this led me to believe it to be the soft plug. So there I am I tore my trans out and get to the soft plug only for it to look reasonably pristine. Is it possible it could be still coming from there? Yes but I can’t believe it would leak the volume of coolant it was. I would expect maybe a dribble. So this points me back to the bypass piping which I can see a little more clearly with the trans out. But still not clear evidence of a leak in that area nor could I imagine if there was a leak there it would get into the cavity inbetween the trans and motor block from the top but provide no evidence or it dribbling down the sides.

I’m not in any shape a professional mechanic just an average dude with a lot of tools and limited experience using them. So all the insight and opinions/ideas I can get the better

    thanks!
