master lock does not work!

I'm pretty new here and have been scouring this site for information about my 2012. Thanks to you all for that! Anyways one of my concerns was not getting my tailgate stolen. I bought a tailgate lock from masterlock, which looked great. This morning I put it on nice and tight, then decided to give it a test.... as I tried moving the tailgate, I worked the lock around a bit... 5 seconds and the tailgate was off! I though, I must not be putting it on right or tight enough, so I tried for another half hour to try and tighten it and secure it. It just doesn't keep the gate secure. I was able to get it off no problem. It looked great on there! Maybe..... the thief will just see it and leave it alone right.. no thanks. I'm not into smoke and mirrors. If you have this lock I would suggest taking another look and testing it. As for myself, ill be mailing it back to masterlock and getting my money back.

After reading your warning, I tried to get my tailgate off with the Master lock in place. I just couldn't do it. I'm looking forward to your video.

 

Seems like a simple enough device to operate. I wonder why its failing for the OP?

I did the hose clamp mod, with head of the clamp facing down with the tailgate open. This makes thief lay on the ground, in need of longer tools, etc. But if I bought a lock, I always liked this one...

 

i have the master lock tailgate lock and have no issues with it. you prob just got a bad one. return it and get another one. there worth it

 

Look where the head of the clamp is when the tailgate is closed when you do it that way. No special tools needed, no need to get your back dirty. Just stick the screwdriver between the tailgate and bumper. If you tighten from below with a screwdriver when tailgate is closed, it's wrench-only access when the tailgate is open.

 

Just checked my Master Lock and it's working correctly. Curious to see the video. I'm guessing a faulty lock.

I'm glad you posted this! I've got those locks on my truck and my son's truck, very happy with them till now. Watched your vid, went out and tried the way you are showing - DAMMMMIT!

Oh well, rather learn through this post than with a missing tailgate!

Wow that's awful!! Just glad you found out now instead of coming out and there's no tailgate. Thank you for warning everyone on here. Maybe Masterlock should view this video too.

 

Can't believe Masterlock let this product on the market. The lock leaves a slot open, just like the existing cup on the tailgate.

try just adding electrical tape or rubber to the lock, that's what i did when my lock was a little big, not this master lock but something else

 

I think the problem is with the way the gate is made. Yes rubber or something could make it harder to move, but once the look is pushed far enough to the left, its all over. So you have this nice lock that wont work unless you modify the way you put it on and even then it could still be moved over with enough pressure. I think I'd have better luck with the hose clamp mod.
