For a Prerunner, I would just find 4 recap studdable traction lug snow tires, have them studded, throw 150 lbs in the back and give it your best shot.

I run BF Goodrich All terrain T/A KO's year round.

Once you upgrade to a 4x4 and pull the transfer case lever into 4 high or 4 low , and you feel all 4 tires grab and go,,you will be sold and you wont look back. Your worries disappear at the pull of a lever for the most part. Then you just have to worry about folks who only have 2wd.

It depends, it can make a difference both good and bad. A locked rear end can also be a bit squirrely when it's slick since you no longer have one tire tracking.

    it does.

But not so much if your front tires still don't have power at all. If you get the rear stuck..your still just as screwed. And lockers aren't good for slick situations.

A lot to consider! I have locking diffs but they only get you so far. Looks like I've got some choices to make. The response is awesome, thanks to all!

The only reason i mentioned a locker was because i was asking if he was sentimental with his truck and couldn't afford to sas it or convert it to 4wd. I mean hell, if i hadn't been through so much with my truck, i'd probably have an SAS'd cherokee on 37's by now. But anyways, lockers do make a difference in certain situations but as mentioned, nothing beats all 4 wheels turning.

LOL,,I hear ya. ,,,Or poke a button. Working on a 93 4x4 danger Ranger that has a low range button and a 4x4 button,,and it's pissing me off. I think it is the slave motor on the side of the tranny/transfer that is not allowing it to click into 4x4. ($85 rebuilt)

The bastardization of 4x4 controls for LAZY PEOPLE as per the manufactures ideology . They want us out of the equation as far as control,,but leave all the money they say.
