Ok, that was one of the most creative trail repairs I've ever seen.

I think the point was the second sentence. “He knows what he’s doing”
And that he recovers all types of vehicles on a daily basis. Which pretty much none of us do:D

I can't believe that she didn't know that she hit the rock. She must have been going pretty fast to bend the spindle.

It's astonishing to me that so many people don't know how to shift without a clutch. Its such easy operation once the principles are understood. I guess I was lucky enough to have my dad teach me at a young age, because it has saved my bacon multiple times in the last 15 years. I may have to do a how-to video for y'all.

Well obviously you have to get it home from the grocery store before it spoils. Having a bad clutch and all :D

Do you prefer "saved my ass" instead?

    1. Wheeling a jeep with friends at night in the middle of the desert 2 hours from home. The linkage from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder sheered off. We were able to jury rig the linkage with a an old 16p nail and a shoe string just enough to get the engine started in 1st gear (no clutch override). Shifted without a clutch all the way home.

    2. Hunting in the Mojave, 12 miles from the nearest paved road. Hydraulic line between master and slave developed pinhole leak and the clutch was permanently engaged. Drove all the way home without a clutch.

    3. Sprained my left ankle while hiking in the Sierras. Drove home without clutch.

    The list goes on.

Although I have shifted without the clutch for kicks and giggles I have never needed the technique to save my bacon. :)

What is all this bacon talk? Did Matt feed Randy bacon in his last episode or something?

I was wondering that too, but I am too lazy to read through the whole thread to find the references to shifting without a clutch and bacon.

Randy needs less bacon and more cardio if he's going to keep chasing after the Yellow Banana like that.

It's an easy operation once you get the hang of it, but bear in mind that synchromesh passenger vehicle transmissions are NOT designed to 'speed shift' or 'float' - I used to do it my old Ranger for s**ts and giggles, but it's not good for the box. The main difference is the number of gears; in a commercial vehicle with a 13, 15, 18, or more speed transmission, the difference between each gear is much smaller than it is in a 3, 4, or 5 speed transmission, so you're dealing with gear speeds that are much closer to each other. FWIW, if you read through any manual From Eton-Fuller, Spicer, or Allison, they will ALL tell you to always use fully-declutch shifting when changing gears.
