Thinking about my rear end again. 1) It is squeaking like crazy. Just lowering the tailgate, stepping on the hitch, and getting inside the cab squeaks it. It's annoying when driving with the windows down at slow speeds. 2) While I was investigating the noise, I had my dad bounce on the bumper while I laid under the truck. I noticed with him standing on the bumper, the springs do a slight negative arch. Without him on it, they are totally flat. Right now I have the shell, roof rack, carpeted piece of plywood, and a bag of chains in the bed. I feel like the springs should be able to support that much weight no problem. These are Toyota OEM springs that came new with my frame back in 2012. Could I put in an AAL to tide me over until I can get new leaf packs? Or should I just live with the annoyance until I can get new packs?

So far I like my OME with aal... They sit pretty flat and neg arch when flexing, but they were made for that I understand.

Toss an Aal in your pack, and grease everything up/recoat finish while you're at it. That's what I would do. Aal is probably less than 100 shipped, plus your sweat equity on install.

Was just going through your build thread. I really want some Dakars, but money is tight until I finish school and my instrument rating. That could be a few months and then more time to save up. I'm thinking that the Toytec 2" AAL might be a good solution to get me through the next several months...Would I need new U-bolts?

YES new ubolts are a must. We just had an interesting discussion on this topic in the ome 1st gen setup thread. They are pretty much designed to be torqued down once, that's it. I stupidly did not replace mine when inserting the AAL. Luckily it has been alright, but highly recommend changing them out.

you really think you cant use the U bolts more than once!? That's pretty ridiculous those things ain't cheap! I had to remove/reinstall to add a 3degree shims under my leafs. About to replace it with a ubolt flip though.

I wouldn't chance it any more. Yeah it is added cost but too important to risk IMHO.

Eh after reading the tech chat im still not really convinced, but to each's own.. IMO even if they stretch a minuscule of a mm I highly doubt one would ever unthread or snap or anything like that..

Your u bolts are old though, if your really on a budget though check how much thread is left below the nut on the u bolts. If you have at least 3/8-1/2" of thread left Id say your good with what you have.

Oh yea well there you go, probably not too old then. But if there's no extra thread you can't do it. Personally Id try to re use them esp since your planning on getting a new leaf pack (probably with new ubolts) within the next year or two.. I would do a good visual inspection on them and if they look good Id use em.

Cool, I'll see how much extra thread I have on the current ones. Thanks!

Ok so yesterday I was replacing my standard ubolts with a ubolt flip kit, I must say those nuts/bolts did not seem like they would work well for a second go around. The integrity of the bolt might be fine but something definitely seems to happen to the threads on either the nuts or the bolts. My standard u bolts were a little less than a year and a half to give you a time reference. I'd say 2-3 out of 8 nuts gave me grief.

Oh, okay. Maybe I should just save up a little more for U bolts. Better safe than sorry, right? :D
