So this thread started as a build thread for my 2001 4Runner, but has evolved into my 'Everything but a Tacoma' thread. So far, it's featured that 4Runner, two 2016 Tundras, a 1985 4Runner, and a 2023 GX460.

The 2001 4Runner was what got me into building cars and going wheeling. It's the first vehicle I've ever owned, and built. It was fully armored, triple locked, geared, and on 35s - just to get parted out.

    Let the fun begin...

    2023 GX460

Welcome to NorCal! Definitely want to see this beast in person. Might as well see your 4Runner too while I'm at it

Ah shit, someone noticed I have a build thread on here now. Guess that means I actually have to get to updating it.

And thanks man! We’ll have to get up sometime and have some fun in the woods or something

So I'm definitely too lazy to keep up with a build thread, so I'm deeming this a "sometimes I post about mods, trip report, plus BS" thread.
And to get things started, I installed a snorkel at a local mod day (huge thanks to @Uphillshunter) and I went camping but not really wheeling so no trip report and only a few pictures. Oh yeah, and a picture of me shipping this pig...

Tires, 5.29s, and front & rear ARBs. My real hold up on this is clearancing for the tires. And picking out a size - too many options...

Was able to get in on a trail run to Bald Mountain. Met some really cool people and it was a nice first real wheeling trip since moving. Scratched a tree, need to re-install my fender flares (see picture 2), but all and all - a really good time. Probably the last time I'll go wheeling for the year with the holidays coming up and I'll be traveling back East but have a few things up my sleeve before the next season...

Most of my ignorance stems from the rear suspension. Will be looking for som advise on Control arms, Trailing Arms, Panhard bars, sway bar setups (F and R)... and that sort of nonsense.

Or hell... how hard would it be to leaf swap the bitch lol.

My advise would be to keep the 4 links running front to rear stock for now. You can upgrade them (and I did) but it's not really necessary until heavy wheeling. I bent my stock ones on some rocks and didn't find it necessary to upgrade them until they bent.

Pan hard bars are pretty damn confusing. Within the last few years, a lot has come to light with them. Before there was a panhard adjustment bracket, a lot of people (including me) just got a longer bar to center everything. This does throw off the geometry a bit and gives you A LOT of body roll. Now, everyone seems to have a correction kitwelded in and it corrects the panhard bar geometry without adding the massive amounts of body roll. I need to do this but I keep thinking 4-Link instead. @eimkeith makes the most popular one and the one I've seen the best feedback on. See the linked thread: With sway bar deletes, expect more body roll in Robert's truck thank in yours because of the rear suspension.

Also, yeah you can add leafs. I don't think it'd be too hard but you might have some gas tank problems. Not sure how the gas tank lines up on 3rd gen 4Runners vs. 1st gen Tacomas.

But keep the rear set up without leafs. Moar flexy :)

I like that panhard kit you linked... not a bad price either.

And with that kit, you just keep the stock bar?
