Hello fellow Taco enthusiast from the mainland in Colorado.

My wife and I will be visiting Maui in the next few weeks. We are hoping to at least do some of the road to Hana if not all of it hopefully completely around including the backside.

We will be renting a 4 door JK wrangler, which I hope will have 4WD.

So is the backside of Hana anything to be worried about, or is it just similar to a shelf road out here in Colorado?

From my research it looks like its BEST to go clockwise.

From the Kamilo Point (20.651435236094873, -156.0756216387005) to
    Kaupo General Store (20.63633584900577, -156.1236754275092)
    or about 4 miles.

Going clockwise it looks like you will be on the inner side of the lane with the ability to side hill if need be for passing.

I have done 4-5 rated trails in a stock 3rd gen TRD OR. I can't imagine this will be super crazy except maybe the 4 mile section above.

Anything else I am missing here?

    Thank You In Advance

Im on Oahu but have done the Hana drive many times. You should be fine with the jeep. Give your self a good 2-3 hrs to go all the around. It's rainy, wet and slippery this time of year, so be careful. Some roads are only gravel at some points and lots of 1 lane bridges.
    Enjoy ur trip.
    Aloha

If all you're doing is going to Hana? A normal rental car is good! But?! If you're actually going to the back side of "Hana"?? The road goes around the island. Depending on the type of damage the recent storms have done it may be impassable. (Washed out roads) but I haven't been back there for years so I'm not too sure.

But just to drive out to Hana you should be fine!
