    Aloha. Here's some recomendations:

    1. Definitely rent a car. I'd recommend keeping it the whole time, but for sure at least while in Lahaina. Lahaina is kind of spread out, with 3 seperate towns/resort areas (Lahaina town, Kaanapali, and Kapalua). Wailea is more centralized, with a better shuttle service.
    2. Paid parking sucks, but even at $240 for all 8 days, it will be worth it to have a car.
    3. Speedi Shuttle is good if you don't have a car. Like I said though, the convenience of having your own rental car is very helpful.
    4. Haleakala (even not at sunrise), Hana, Honolua Bay & Golf in Kapalua, Kaanapali Beach.
    5. I'll separate my recommendations into "Fancy" and "Casual" categories:

    Fancy:

Mama's Fish House (maybe first or last night in town since it's pretty close to the airport)
    Humu in Grand Wailea
    Haliimaile General Store
    Lahaina Grill
    Merriman's Kapalua
Sansei in Kapalua or Kihei for either early bird or late-night specials

    Casual:
Town: Da Kitchen, Sam Satos, Tin Roof, Ichiban (Kahului or Wailuku), Umi, 808 on Main
Kihei/Wailea: Da Kitchen, 3's Bar & Grill, Shearwater Tavern, Pint & Cork, 808 Deli
Lahaina/Kaanapali/Kapalua: Honolua Store, Honokowai Okazuya, Hula Grill, Mama's Grill & Rotisserie, Maui Tacos

    Have a good trip!

We go every year. Hit up Star Noodle in Lahaina as well. Fantastic dinner spot. Also if you are having a romantic dinner sunset at Merriman's is incredible, expensive, but couldn't recommend it enough. Sunset drinks on Hula Girl catamaran is really fun too. Don't know much about the Wailea side though we always stay around Napili beach.

it's not about the drive to hana... it's about the mini adventures along the way... pack a picnic/snacks/drinks and enjoy the stops along the road to hana and take your time.
just remember, you can try but you really can't do it all in one day... drive safe, alert and have fun ...and always give the right away to the locals.

young kids would have fun? If I am in Wailea, when should I leave for the drive? When should I expect to return?

it's a long road trip so the kids may grow tired... the duration will depend on the weather... it's the wettest part of the island so keep informed and play it safe...
but kids and adults will have a blast... there are trails to hike, pools to swim and amazing scenery to gaze in awe.
if you don't make it all the way to hana because you took the time to hike and explore... don't worry... there is always next time :)
