I see alot of reviews on maxtrax on how great they are in sand, snow and ice....but not a whole lot in how they perform when your bogged down in mud. When I'm out and about, muds probably my biggest concern and I don't have the cash for a bumper and winch right now.
Are they any good in mud?

Yes, but as usual - do NOT spin the tires, which may be difficult considering the nature of mud on tire treads.
Also, you'll need a method of finding them after you're out (strong webbing, not some simple paracord), and you'll need a shovel to extricate them.
All of this is why people won't often use them for that as first choice.

I can’t speak much about sand, but I’ve used traction boards in mud and snow. I’ve found them generally better in mud than in snow, but it depends on what type of snow. They tend to just shoot out in powdery low density snow especially if there is ice under it. In denser snow they work great. For icy conditions it would help if they had metal studs on the bottom or maybe i could turn them upside down and use the studs on top (I have treds).
