I’m looking to buy some boards and was also going to get some secure mounting pins. They are going to go on my upTOP bed TRUSS.

The cool thing is that upTOP has mounting locations specifically for the pins. The bad news is that the nuts are exposed. It seems as though all one has to do is unbolt the pins from the rack and then take the boards home and figure out how to Get the locks off there.

Anyone have ideas of how to secure the pins to the mounts? I was thinking I could tack weld the nuts to the bolts but that would be kinda permanent.

If someone wants to steal them, the pins being more secure isn’t going to stop them. They’ll just snip the tiny lock and off they go.

I just avoid parking any place where someone is going to steal them.

Looking at the first picture, you might be able to cover the bolt/ nut with a piece of tubing wedged between the upper mounting tab and the lower section under the bolt. So, you would be sliding the bolt/nut in the tube. Also, just to keep it from being seen a rubber hose that would cover the bolt/nut might work.

why don’t you just wrap a cable lock through the maxtrax and roof rack?

If someone wants to climb 7 plus feet up onto my Habitat, I guess they can have mine. I've never locked them on.

    Don't get any ideas, guys.

An even easier way is to use a hex key, and just undo the little tension screw on the top. To undo the lower bolt usually requires a set of channel locks to keep the pin part from spinning as you undo the nylock.

I'm satisfied with mine on the Prinsu, you are correct, if someone had time and a toolkit it would be pretty easy to get them off.
I use a padlock on the back inside pin - you would need to climb up onto the roof to reach it.. The other three pins get a cable-tie through the loop to keep everyone honest.

Pretty tough to reach the bolts underneath, but anyone with a hex could take those crossbars off the rack entirely.

Wish they would make them so that you insert a carriage bolt from one side and then screw the pin on from the other side. Seems like a smarter solution with minimal R&D requirements

Seems like a good hack. Just buy the appropriately threaded carriage bolts. $3.
