I've had mine for 2500 miles or so. Thats not a ton of mileage, but yeah, they are quiet but 2500 miles isn't enough to know how they wear, but the SL's do have a 60k mile warranty.

    Yes. Left is P285/70/17 - SL, right is LT285/70/17 - E

This thread got me all excited for potential new tires for my truck, then I saw the prices for the E load. Back to research.

$188 a tire is too much?

Just got mine put on! They pumped them all the way up to 40 psi, not quite sure why. I would assume these need to be around 31 like the stock tires, no?

Yeah, thats where mine are. I still follow the door placcard since the SL version of these tires is very similar to the OEM tires.

They are $8 per tire cheaper than the Wildpeaks I suppose.

Really happy so far! Slightly more road noise, but MPG thus far seems to be nearly the same, and feels much better on dirt/sand than my well-worn stockers for sure. Very much appreciate all the input from folks in this thread :)

Responding to old comment, but I hated Cush cores. My down hill riding definitely got better and comfortable but the climbs (front range CO with 2K+ techy climbs in < 5 miles) became almost unbearable (And I generally like climbing too!). Then to top it off, when I had to replace my tires, I couldn't get the tire mounted and even made a small dent in the rim. Just cut them off and said peace. Could see a use for em in DH / Enduro world though.

Looks nice, did you do any trimming to fit those 33s ?

What’s the lowest you’d air these (stock size maxxis SL) down to? I realize weight and terrain makes a difference - but for the sake of argument, lets assume it’s a weekend camping trip with trails that require airing down but not heavy crawling — and not a built out overlanding rig.

As a newbie to anything off road, I figured I’d air down to 21ish and go lower as I see fit with the lowest being 16psi. Reasonable?

(Again - fully aware that conditions may warrant different things - just trying to get my bearings on a proper air down “range” for non-LT tires. )

edit: entertaining. This was just posted too. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/off-roading-psi-question.722029/ I guess I’m on the right track. But comments welcome

These tires are definitely a direct clone of the Nitto Ridge Grappler, even down to the crown shape of the sidewall pattern, with minimal changes. What's curious about this is Maxxis is owned by Cheng Shin, and Nitto is owned by Toyo. Either Maxxis tried to copy these without violating copyright, or they worked with Toyo/Nitto collaboratively. I'd be curious to see which it is. Anyone who has these, can you take a picture of the sidewall where it says these are made?

All that being said, it looks like they at least improved on Nitto's design.

16 might be pushing it. Because it's a more compliant tire, you don't really need to go quite as low as you would with an LT/E. I've run at 20 several times with good results, so if'n, it was me, I'd probably start there, and then depending on how things go, make adjustments based on your trucks weight, the road conditions, etc.

I don't have these tires. I have do air the stock wranglers down to 14 often, and have run them as low as 10 psi with zero issues. I would find it hard to believe you couldn't go down to 12 psi on these if you wanted to.

I've got about 2k on the 65/70 SL Maxxis and really like em. I was definitely concious of the weight of all the 75 E rated ie Falken, BFG etc which are all north of 50lbs & just didn't want to deal w that. The maxxis are maybe a bit more firm on the road and do nicely on moderate off road. MPG dropped a wee bit vs the goodyear & noise is barely noticeable per my wife.

Noticed you are also running an RTT; what have you air down to on the moderate off roads?

Still experimenting but 20 lbs seems ok w the cap and RTT. May try lower next trip.. Anyone else find a number that works well with a load?

Just got these on yesterday and initial impressions are very good. The shop I used inflated to 40, but I’ll be experimenting over time. Truck feels much better, a very very minor increase in noise (in current new state) if anything at all, and they look awesome to boot.

If you got the SL, 40 is way too high. Run them at 31 or 32. Mine are at 36 and 38 from the shop and it was pretty rough and unnecessary.
With my truck, that has minimal weight at the moment, 31 seems to be the sweet spot
(Ignore if you got the LT; not sure what would be best there)
