Most webxperts get hung up on unsprung/vs sprung mass. But thats inconsequential. The reason light tires/wheels matter is because of whats called Moment of Inertia or Momentum of Inertia. The heavier a wheel/tire - especially the further you get from center - the greater the impact. The heavier, the more energy is required to accelerate, slow, suspend that mass/weight.

Lighter wheels and lighter tires make the entire truck feel more lively/peppy.

The reason they get hung up on the unsprung mass, is because greater unsprung mass is what translates into greater momentum of inertia. I’m not sure of your point here. Your last sentence even uses the term “lighter” which would refer to mass not inertia.

A better argument for rotational inertia would be 2 equal weight tires of different diameter. Or even more of an equation to solve would be the difference between a smaller diameter heavier tire vs a larger diameter lighter tire. Or heavier wheel lighter tire vs lighter wheel heavier tire.

Is anyone running these in 265/75/16 on stock suspension? I just want to make sure I won't rub before I pull the trigger. I'm driving a 21 offroad

Yeah, you're not wrong but that wasn't my point. To say its all about unsprung mass and then they get hung up on reducing weight of the center if the wheel/hub, etc. Mass along the perimeter, as you mentioned, is more significant because of momentum of inertia. Hence a lighter tire or a forged wheel that reduces mass at the perimeter is more significant to how the vehicle behaves.

I don't think we're saying anything different from each other.

Yes it'll fit but the 75 is an E rated and very, very heavy tire, well in excess of the rating of your suspension and axle. 99.995% of Tacoma drivers do not need such a burly, heavy tire and installing such heavy tires has adverse effects on the day to day drivability of the truck.

You probably want an SL rated, that on the Maxxis, only comes in a 70.

Had these on for 2 months now, driven across the entire US in any weather but snow/ice so far.

Got them mostly for the aggressive look and weight while hoping they’ll also do well in winter weather.

So far I’m enjoying them over stock, not much added road noise, still get about 20mpg highway (this is an MT so not much worse that stock).

    SL in 285/70r17s

The sidewall appears pretty hefty for an SL. Looks like he took a sharp rock right on the edge?

Well, thanks to you guys just contacted my tire shop and said I want these in 285s so I'll bring my truck in and let them figure out how to make them fit.

Simpletire and Discount Tire eBay stores are running a $100 off orders of $400+. The coupon can be used twice, and they sell sets of 2…a set of 2 is $413.92 for 285/70/17 SL.

I’ve got some on the way.

edit: Pricing seems to be fluctuating by the minute

Yeah, thats what I thought too. Quite a bit thicker than I was expecting for an SL. He was running close to 40psi and bombing along a trail in moab and hammered a rock with his sidewall upload_2021-10-26_17-4-36.jpg

Yep, that'll do it. Nice rock rash on the wheel as well.

First set of 2 tires delivered today. Both 285/70/17 SL weighed in at exactly 43lbs on a bathroom scale.

Letting them hang out with their Maxxis brethren until the second set arrives.

Ha! That's awesome. I gotta say I'm disappointed. An entire summer at MTB trailheads, not a single person noticed the Maxxis truck tires.

It’s through the simple tire eBay store, so it’s just a box to check rather than a promo to enter.

The prices are all over the place. Price for a set of 2 has increased ~$70 since I ordered on Sunday.
