I know it looks bad but I would try cleaning it first. Buy a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol and a tooth brush/q-tips. Douse the entire thing and clean the entire board really well. Worth a shot before dropping a couple hundo on a "new" ECU.

Yeah why not try to at least clean off what you can and give it a go? No way to repair once wet? I guess I feel ya if this is your daily driver and you just need it running.

In my line of work I see a lot of wet / damaged boards etc. Corrosion is tough on boards, in this case the ECU. An option would be to head to a cellphone/tablet repair shop and see if they can clean it for you. Wet damaged phones are common in their line of work. However, often times the corrosion persists after cleaning and could cause issues in the future. I believe a replacement ECU was a good call.

Attempted to clean it but one of the chip wire connections was so corroded it broke when I brushed with toothbrush . Pretty sure this thing is done. When the new one arrives do I need to get it programmed with the vin or anything like that?

Makes sense, the leads were pretty corroded. You could microsolder it back on but I would call it done for.

Well done! You got the truck home. It started. You found trouble. Ordered new part. I'd say this whole situation is going along quite nicely -- good work!

I personally wouldn't bother trying to clean the old one. There's so much detailed crap in there all you need is for it to work today and leave you stranded next month. Sounds like you ordered one -- best approach.

Looking forward to the next and final installments --

Even though it's expensive, at least you know for sure what's wrong versus every situation where someone tries everything and concludes it "must" be the ECU. I watched a video of a mechanic chasing an electrical problem and it ended up that some wire sheathings melted somehow in one spot, so wires were touching each other there inside the harness that finally was suspect when he looked closely and then tore it open.

ill be pivoting to the brake issue next while we wait for the new ecu. somewhere its leaking profusely haven't found where yet. res is almost completely empty. I did a ome suspension lift and I don't think I put on a longer line in the back to account for the difference . if I remember correctly it was just enough line when jacked up not to be banjo strung. more to come. good day

Yeah I couldn’t find any breaks in the hoses yesterday. I’m fixing to put this old ecm back together and see if it improved functionality. If I can get heat I can dry out the floor much easier. And I’ll check back in when I figure anything else out on the brakes. Marnin fellas !

The leg coming off the chip I thought was broken is just a black corrosion spot. I can’t see this old ecu not functioning better than it was yesterday after I cleaned it up. Then brakes.

When ive gone mudding with my tacoma it seems everytime the drums get packed with mud and the shoe adjusters back off so much that it makes it feel like a soft pedal. Might be worth checking into.

Put in the old ecu, can’t get it to fire up anymore. Cranks but no fire up. No amount of poking around near the battery will get it to the condition it was yesterday. Saw this little bell module coming off the master cylinder , I’m wondering if it was the alarm that was audible that I was hearing yesterday when I was able to bump the right stuff and get it started. Gonna put the battery on the tender and try again after while. When i heard the muffled tone i knew it would start. IMG_2286.jpg

So we tested for power in the fuse box under the hood and we aren’t getting any power to any relays or main fuses related to engine.

Power steering fluid milky. All fluids will be changed again after we get it starting. I’m certain the airbag module behind the car lighter ports center dash was underwater , have airbag light on, but that will be sorted after the thing starts and drives. A friend has a good scan tool with scope and all, we’ll zap it at his place next week and see what codes it’s throwing.

Have have stuffed my tacomas carpet in the washing machine and dryer more then once. Giant pain in the ass but it comes out smelling like fresh laundry.
