On the too many oil changes, I have long wondered if the start where it takes a little longer to get oil pressure after a change doesn't cause a little excess wear. Meaning too many oil changes could actually be bad for longevity.

In the end I'm sticking to 10k changes other than the one at 4k. 10/20/30/etc is easy to remember it needs maintenance.

Not if you put oil in the filter and fill up the engine before cranking it over. Everything is still lubricated from the previous oil you just pulled out

Right. How do you fill the filter on the Tacoma?

I have, trigs and LDL are a little high, but GGT is still good so I can keep drinking. I call this a win in my book :)

Agreed, oil analysis is overkill if you haven't tuned your engine. Usually you would do an oil analysis if you modify your engine to make sure you're not about to blow it. I know Subaru guys do this so they know when to trade in their WRXs before the engine blows from their tune.

what would an oil analysis tell you about an engine tune that a wideband and knock counter wouldnt?

Scan gauges and oil analysis just induce paranoia.

Gen one had an upside down filter you could fill then screw on, I think Gen 2 is right side up. You can’t fill it. Gen 3 is a canister style is it not?? No filling up that one.

It could tell you if you had wear elements in the oil which could be due to excessive stress on engine components due to the tune.

I completely agree with you.. An analogy is what I apparently failed to attempt to present. When I drive something that isn't mine, I take extra care of it. For example, when I get a loaner service vehicle/rental I find myself driving like a grandma. I have a 2021 CRV on lease and I do all the scheduled crap. Yep, I'm a fcking Angel.. Except I do judge people...

This is what I have always done as well bc I quite literally wouldn’t know what to do otherwise.

Absolutely. It’s also one of the ways they mitigate smoke smell after a house fire.

Great info OP. THANKS for posting the hard data. Kinda funny how (most of us) are driving $30K + vehicles and worry about saving $150 a year in oil changes. Over the life of the average car loan...at 60 months...that's $750. I had to read that twice after I wrote it. $750 over 5 years on a $30K investment. Seems like a small price to pay. Probably half that much for the DIY guys/ weekend wrenchers. Educate me: Is there an issue with changing the oil regardless of mileage? If a person changes oil every 3500 vs every 5K or at every 5K vs 10K, other than the $150...what's the damage? Compared to the race crowd, where it's changed after every track weekend, seems kinda cheap. No?

Agreed, its cheap insurance. No real reason to knock the practice even if you dont plan on keeping the vehicle long term.
